When i checked the reviews for this card i was pretty shocked there was only one, which was negative. I've only 20 Matches with him so far, but in that time, he has been amazing. At a budget of about 2m spending 350k on a defender hurts, but since at the time it was only 200k to upgrade from NIF to SIF i was willing to give it a shot.
Well lets get to the card: With ANCHOR he has 73 acceleration 82 sprint speed. This isnt fast, even for a CB, but for me his speed didnt limit his game at all. However, this might be because my full backs stay behind the whole match and my defense is always pretty far back to prevent counter attacks. On the defensive side his stats are just to good to be true. With 93+ on every stat plus 99 Strength he wins basically every tackle and every header. He obviously isnt the most agile Defender, but his huge frame makes up for it and he always seems to be in a great spot to tackle, intercept the ball, win a header or block the shot.
A big bonus for this card is his really good passing. He's got the composure and passing stats to make clean passes even in dangerous moments. His crosses to the fullbacks hit the target every time. He also gets pretty dangerous on corners where he scored 3 goals for me already, even though i have 4 other guys(Fabinho, Kane, Talisca, Arnautovic) who are also very tall and dangerous at corners.
Obviously a card is not gonna do it all for you and doesn't single-handedly stop people from scoring. When i got all-out offense he did in fact got outpaced by fast players on counter-attacks, but that happened literally one time and it was POTM Auba. The biggest flaw of this card is obviously his price tag. Normal VVD is also a really great card who gives you nearly the same dominance on defense. While the SIF is definetly an upgrade, 250k might be better spend on other positions. But thats just personal preference i guess.
At last, i'd like to apologize for grammar mistakes and wrong phrases i used. English is not my native language
My back four: Alex Sandro IF, Marquinhos IF, VVD SIF, Trent IF
My formation: 4321

The SIF Virgil Van Dijk is perhaps the best defender I have used this Fifa. I got him as an untradeable from the Black Friday TOTW upgrade pack. Because of that i cannot speak to his value for coins. However he has been a staple in my team since he joined my club. He currently plays on 8 chem on my team, with futmas Van Aanholt and base Umtiti next to him. I plan on buying Lloris once i have enough coins. Lala and Kondogbia are the only cards i have purchased on my team, and Navas is the best keeper i have in terms of chemistry rn.
I usually run a 4-2-3-1 in game with Prime Keane and Base Kondogbia as my CDMs. I run either drop back or pressure on heavy touch as my defensive tactics. In both cases Virgil is smart enough to step up and make challenges on the attacking player before they can gain full control. 95% of the time he is able to cleanly win the challenge and make a pass to end the opposition's attack. I attribute the 5% of failure as user error because im pretty trash at the game. I also think you should have a Med/High paired next to him, not because his work rates negatively effect him, but because if he does step up its nice to have a man behind him: just as a precaution in the rare event he doesn't win the challenge.
In the attacking third this card is deadly from corners. Although I am still learning and perfecting my corners anything that gets to him is going on target and with pace. I'd say 30-50% of his offensive headers end up as a goal-line clearance or an amazing save by the opponent's keeper.
This card is fantastic as a towering defender who rarely has to make extended plays with the ball at his feet. If you are on a budget this card probably isnt for you. I think the 400K coins would be better spent on a Kante or Pogba. But I still recommend this card 10/10, if you need a stop gap until you can afford one of the icon CBs this is your man. You may even decide he is a more efficient option that splurging on an icon defender.
Wins almost everything in the air, especially in the defensive third of the field.
Has fantastic instincts and almost never make a bad choice to step up and disrupt and attack.
Virgil is an amazing target on corners because of his height.
Neutralizes opponents corners. Anyone he marks never wins a header from a corner.
Does not have the blistering pace of Varane, but is more than capable of closing during a counter attack.
I'm not sure how his shot is as i never have the chance to take shots from corners (he is always in the box).
His passing and dribbling could be better but are more than sufficient for the role he plays.
To start, I am a Division 3 player. I often read these reviews and wonder if the information is true and valid for 'decent' players. I'm not the best FIFA player but not the worst however i have played FIFA for many years and have a good understanding most things FUT.
let's keep it simple, is he good? Well of course he is. He is an 87 rated defender who is 6'4 and has not only very high attributes in defending but his passing and dribbling game for a defender are great on the card. he is a EPL defender so naturally he is going to cost 3 x the value of similar players in different leagues (Godin IF for example)
In game he is much like his standard card, the difference is minimal IMO and i have used all of his cards. I do notice his workrates of M/M, this can be either a good or bad thing. At times he would randomly push up and try and win the ball which worked 60/40. The times it worked great but the times it didn't you have a nice gap for the opposing team. His defensive movement is ok but Sanchez is far Superior in terms of effective defensive contribution. (tackling and positioning)
there is no denying he is a great player in game but i can't help but think the combination of Meta info and general hype make people believe he is some kind of demon in defense. I have 2 teams and i find IF Godin with Anchor so much better overall.
So yea he is a great but for the price i'd say invest in a more solid CDM or CM personally as they can influence the game so much more in both attack and defense.
Medium work rate in defense
Defensive Positioning .
Don't know how to start, this guy was a trigger to sell all my tradeable players... I had a Seria A and Prem hybrid, with Telles(UCL live)-Virgil -Skriniar(87 rated)- Cancelo IF. I bought him last friday and was so excited to play a WL... but in fact it was a first WL which I end up not playing all matches, and quit playing after 13th game (7 wins, 6 losses). Before him I had Miranda - he provided the same results(his value 10-12k).
Now back to player review:
Everyone was talking about the in-game experience of VVD and bla bla bla. My in-game experience: his value is 100k coins max, so damn overpriced. He was clumsy and slow, and in my possession plays he was just outraced by opponent strikers on counter attacks - 90% of occasions. Skriniar is simply better in everything, compared to this guy, the only thing is his league.
Overall I would say that he`s not worth 400K. It`s really tough as we don`t have any other options in BPL as CB(only Sanchez- hard to chem him).
Strength: he is quite strong guy, and bullied some strikers.
Headers: shown some strong presence on corners both defensive and attacking.
Stamina: can play 120 mins
Passing: passing felt ok, some times made good crosses to wingers
Pace: for second IF he got only +2 upgrade compared to his normal card. Felt too slow and clumsy.
Positioning: most of the times he was loosing his position and trying to make unsuccessful interceptions and tackles, even if I didn`t control him.
Agility: it takes ages for him to turn around.
