I think Lockdown is over now… There is always that list of footballers not playing for the team you support that you want to hate, but you just can’t. They are fantastic footballers, stay away from controversy, and just seem like sound individuals. For me, Kevin De Bruyne sits firmly on my list. I could watch KDB play football for hours and often tune in to City matches just to see what he will do next. Given the amazing standards he has created in real life, he was rightly presented with a 99 overall rated TOTSSF card. But I had serious reservations purchasing and testing this version. 94 IF KDB was one of my favorite cards at the time it was released and then I was fortunate enough to get 95 IF Moments KDB as my red pick at the end of March. Since then I have played only 37 matches with 95 KDB as the card is one of the biggest frauds I have used this year. I have no idea why, but he is unbearably bad. With this terrible experience in mind, I jumped into this review with heavy skepticism. Using the ENGINE chemistry style I deployed KDB as the box to box CM in my 4-4-2 formation. KDB aimed to win my allegiances back all weekend in the following squad:
TOTSSF KDB is the Swiss Army Knife of FUT. Beyond GK (although he couldn’t be worse than TOTSSF Alisson) you can play this card in literally any position. I know a few FUT Managers who swear by KDB as a ST and I have tested him there in the past with good results, he has the Pace, Defending and Physical statistics to play anywhere in the backline, and then he has the qualities to cover any midfield positions. However, at 2.4 million coins I feel like KDB needed to shine as a box to box, all-action, game-changing midfielder to justify the lofty price tag. 98 ACCELERATION & 97 SPRINT SPEED are 100% accurate off of the ball and just about there on the ball… which was my biggest issue with the 95 rated version along with the dribbling. Thankfully, 92 AGILITY & 95 BALANCE has rescued TOTSSF KDB and made him the magician on the ball in-game that operates in real life. While the early impressions were good, KDB had a lot of tests to pass before he received a quality grade for this weekend’s performance.
Linkability
Linkability Rating: 4/5
The Premier League options are endless. The Man City options are incredibly overpowered in attack. But the Belgian options are just not there to link to the hybrids you have in mind. The Ligue 1 options especially are way out of the current quality of players available… and the lack of a Belgian ICON option cannot bail you out if needed.
End Game Strength
End Game Strength Rating: 5/5
The reason I tune in to be entertained by KDB is his range and vision for passing; he literally sees the impossible, imagines the probable and executes the unthinkable. Interestingly, I found this was the case in the passing with this card all weekend. The range of passing and execution with this card is a breath of fresh air. Regardless of the type, range, or position of passes I attempted, KDB delivered the goods and really facilitated the transitions from defensive to middle to attacking third… and he does so with a flair and consistency that is surprisingly pleasing.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 4.5/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 5/5
I wanted to be wowed, and I wanted KDB to bring a level of defensive cover and offensive contribution that justified the 2.4 million coin price tag... and I think he fell just short of those expectations. Having used Prime Moments Matthäus for two weekend leagues I did not notice a substantial upgrade… let alone an upgrade of 700k. I can’t deny that KDB blows Matthäus away in terms of passing, but then they split the Shooting (KDB) and Defending (Matthäus). With a 5 STAR WEAK FOOT and near perfect shooting statistics, I thought KDB was going to wear out the netting this weekend… and while he did chip in at times, I found he missed a lot of the same opportunities that lower-rated options have missed in the past. From a defending standpoint KDB does a job and tracks back well with his 99 STAMINA keeping the tank full all match, and in the end, he is more than capable in defense… but not nearly as reliable at being in the correct position to intercept the ball as Matthäus. The 90 INTERCEPTIONS and 85 STANDING TACKLE were slightly underwhelming… and a SHADOW boost to solve these issues off of the ball takes away the AGILITY and BALANCE that made this card so effective on it.
All that remains to discuss is the physicality of this card… and there is an issue in KDB’s 76 JUMPING, which joins 75 SLIDING TACKLE as the only non-80+ statistics with this card. At 5’11 (181 cm) I thought that KDB would still be fine, and maybe having gone over the statistics before the review I was hyper-aware of the low rating… but I swear this card gets bullied in the air. The comparison to TOTY de Jong was on display and really showed a difference in the two options. But… that is it. That is the only concern, and everything else is pure genius, so we still hit an easy 5/5 moving into the final words on this card.
Closing Words
Before we get out the pitchforks, I am not saying that KDB is not a fantastic card. He is 99 rated… don’t forget … “we all saw that coming.” And unlike Home Alone, this Kevin does not go missing and was a key contributor to my weekend league success for sure. But I won’t apologize for saying that there are options, like Matthäus, who do as good of a job (and better in some areas), who are considerably cheaper and are easier to link in your squad. KDB controlled my midfield all weekend, but he didn’t take over and dominate, and for the price and 99 rating I expected domination. I was quite concerned that if this review went overly well that I might have some serious team decisions to make in order to keep him permanently. But instead, I am happy to have used KDB and experienced the passing poetry, and now I will sell and move on going forward. In the end… this card is class, just not the masterclass. Cheers for reading.
Off the back of my worst weekend league finish ever - 8 miserable wins in a row to leave me silver 1, an agonising 1 win from my 2 player picks on Thursday - I punted a few untradable rare golds into the Premier League Upgrade SBC and received my consolation, and then some, from EA. When the light blue waterfall of TOTS flares went on in the tunnel I was a little confused, having never seen them before. But when the Belgian flag came up I knew what was coming and I felt a wave of ecstasy pulse out from my chest as the card became visible and De Bruyne lurched on screen imitating a T-rex/velociraptor for some reason.
I had to try him out straight away so he went into my pretty average team alongside base Pogba and behind base Heung-Min Son and my red pick Martial from a couple weeks back. First game in rivals division 7 my opponent disconnected immediately, clearly intimidated by the Ginger genius. Second game De Bruyne got his debut goal, the first of many to come, by being first to a rebound and slotting it in. Didn’t get too much of a feel for him in this game because of an early rage quit but it was noticeable how much he was sprinting up and down the pitch, determined to be involved and it was a neat finish.
The third game is when he was truly unleashed. With only two minutes on the clock he pounced on a pass at the back, took one touch to get a sight of goal past the defender, then curled it into the top corner with a power finesse from outside the box. From that moment on, it was the Kevin show. He was everywhere on the pitch: intercepting passes and tackling in my half, then suddenly teleporting forward to receive (admittedly hopeful) through balls beyond the opponent’s defensive mids, contorting his runs to evade the opponent’s defenders and the laws of physics then distributing the ball effortlessly or pushing it between the back 2 to make a chance for himself. When play slowed, he found space on the edge of the box to take a punt from range. But to call them punts would be a disservice, so precisely targetted were his missiles. In the end, he scored 5 of my 6 goals, all of them works of art.
He was almost too good in games to come. He feels like he was transported from an earlier, arcadier Fifa: maybe Fifa 14. It’s becoming difficult to use the players around him, who now feel drunkenly sluggish. If you’re lucky enough to get a hold of this card, you won’t be disappointed. And if you’re somehow sitting there with a couple million coins, sell your team and buy this guy. He could be the only player on the pitch and you’d still win half your games.
Pace - Probably the fastest player I’ve used
Dribbling - Physics-defyingly agile. As responsive to your thumb movements as your fingernails
Shooting - Press O to score. Scored every kind of goal with him: low driven, finesse, long shots, tap-ins. No complaints
Defending - Good tackles and interceptions. Reflexes, agility and pace along with High/High workrates mean he’s always back in time to put pressure on the opponent in your own half
150 stamina
Missed a couple interceptions he should have reached
Once you get this guy, you’ve completed the game. Now you have to go back to the real world
Superb, packed him untradeable and turned my team around, can defend, attack, and his shot, if not blocked by a defender, will 100% go in. Only reason he doesn't have more goals and assists are because people quit right after seeing him.
My luck this season has been generally incredible, highlighted by somehow pulling KDB tradeable from one of the 100 packs I saved for EPL TOTSSF. This left me with a big decision to make: sell him for 3.5 mill and rebuild the entire squad, or keep him and experience what it's like to play with one of the best cards in the game. I'm not the greatest at FIFA nor usually the luckiest with packs, so I figured I'd take this one and only chance to try out a best-in-class player.
My review below is broken into two phases. In the first phase I needed a CAM, so that's where I played him, but I can tell you now that to really unlock the magic of this card you need to shift him further back on the pitch. I played him at CDM in the 2nd phase.
First Phase (CAM, 4-2-3-1)
It's impossible not to notice his pace and shot power. KDB scores two goals on his debut and guides me to a best-ever finish in WL (Gold 2). Every chance I create for him, he puts away.
The problem is: it's not that easy to create chances for him. His pace is incredible, but his agility and acceleration are not. My two other CAMs, birthday Ozil and PIM Laudrup from swaps, are much better at snaking past opposition defenders. I find that I'm using him more to bust a gut up and down the pitch, tracking back, harrying, winning the ball and then carrying it back to the opposition box, which gives me the idea to shift him into an aggressive box-to-box role.
Second Phase (CDM, 4-2-3-1)
In the time before KDB, I played with both CDMs on Stay Back and would trigger their runs manually. I found that was the only way of getting enough security through the middle against the overused 4-1-2-1-2.
However, I decided to push De Brunye into one of these CDM slots and changed his instructions to Get Forward. This proved to be the best decision I've made this year in FIFA.
I discovered that what ties all of KDB's attributes together is his neverending STAMINA. The guy is literally everywhere. When the opponent looks to play a long ball over the top, I close him down with KDB, confident in the knowledge that the AI will bring him back to my box before any of the opposition's supporting attackers due in part to his high defensive work rate. If your Neymars, Mbappes, or Ben Yedders manage to get past him, KDB is able to make up the yards due to his exceptional pace. But the reason this card is absolutely elite is after winning the ball back, he can carry it halfway across the pitch, shield, lay off to an attacker, and stay involved with forward play.
He is a complete, perfect, central midfielder. He simply does not tire. Give him attacking and defensive responsibilities and watch as he does the job of two or three normal players.
Never-ending stamina
Finishing from distance
5* weak foot
Dribbling is not good enough to beat decent defenders at this stage of the game
I packed this guy in a Mega Pack, at first when the blue light start to litt up i was like ok... a Saudi League TOTSSF at least, then the Belgium flag came out and i dind't remember which player could be, i couldn't even imagine it was going to be this BEAST. So when he showed up i couldn't believe it, i called my brother so he could see what i had gotten. I thought to sell him at first and build a better team with 4.5 million coins but i decided of course to try him first.
OMG first game, he bangs a hat-trick playing as a CAM. He is by far the best card i have tested, he can play anywhere but i do recomend to put him as a CAM or as a CM so that he can get the ball all the time. I really can't tell you anything bad about him because it really isn't i have played him 22 games and he has scored 27 goals and gave 15 assists. Mad numbers if you ask me.
If you can get this guy, really you will love him, he is outstanding and can play anywhere, he can score from volleys, FK, corner kicks. Just shoot with him and almost sure you will score.
Literally everything, there's nothing he can't do.
I have been looking for the perfect B2B CM in a 4 4 2 for a long time now. I tried FB Pogba, Matthaus, Essien, KdBs Toty version and many others and noone came close to the performance of this TOTS KdB.
I used him with an engine Chem Style and gave him the Cover Center instruction, nothing else.
Pace
You can really feel the pace boost he got from his TOTY. He's really really quick for a CM. Not Mbappe but still pretty much the quickest CM I have played this FIFA.
9,5/10
Shooting
His ingame shooting matches his stats. Amazing longshots, reliable finishing. He missed an opportunity here and there but IMO thats what every player does in this game. On top of that his 5 Star WF makes him unpredictable.
9,5/10
Passing
Pretty much what you can expect. Absolute perfection. He seems to find the perfect pass in every single situation and especially doesn't lose his head when under pressure. The best passing that I have witnessed on any player this FIFA.
10/10
Dribbling
Surely he isn't Messi or Neymar but for a CM his dribbling is insanely good. You can really feel the boosted agility and balance. His Ball control, Reactions and Composure are top tier.
9,5/10
Defending
Not Vieira but you can really feel the 99 defensive awareness as he always seems to be at the right point at the right time in defense. On top of that his tackling is really solid.
9/10
Physical
90+ Strength and Aggression, Stamina to last all game. His Physical is absolutely great.
9,5/10
Even if he doesn't get a 10/10 in every aspect, he is the most complete player in FIFA 20 IMO. High/High Work rates, 4* 5* and these stats just make him the perfect CM.
TBH I was disappointed with this card, especially in attack. He loses the ball a lot, and is so slow to dribble(which I think is due to his average agility and balance). I have used many meta cams throughout FUT like TOTY Messi, Neymar etc. but I'm confident enough to say he is worse.
His shooting is amazing, whether it's finesse shots or just a normal outside the box shot.
His through passes are very accurate, but his slow turns prevent him from playing fast short passes.
His strength is good enough.
Interceptions are really good
Dribbling is awful, just so sticky with the ball, slow to progress the ball.
When I played him in cm/cdm he intercepted the ball really well but was awkward tracking back, even Vieira was faster tracking back.
Pace: Sometimes he has this sudden burst, but usually he's slow and gets tackled quick.
I strongly suggest for you to look at other players for your attack, I'd say he could do a job at CDM, but there are better alternatives for this price.
