I packed this bad boy untradeable and, as I was searching for a new CB for my poor mans defense, he that came in lucky. Played 20 WL games with him, going 14-6 (very good for me), with Rúben Dias in the following back four:
Ferland Mendy (Gold NIF) - Rúben Dias - Joe Gomez (Gold NIF) - James Tavernier (Headliners) - GK Ederson (Gold NIF)
Starting with the bad:
He is slow, with 74 Acceleration and 78 Sprint Speed at base levels he is behind the meta. SHADOW is a must and even that doesn't entirely fix the Pace dilemma. Admittedly he positions really well, where most of the time its not detrimental, but in the few "chase" situations that do occur in a game, you will feel it and dread it, as the pacey bois can glitch through a tackle at times and just run away. In tandem with the bad pace is his feel on the ball. He is clunky. Now this is fairly normal for a guy with his height and weight, but it is nonetheless annoying as I hoped the face 73 Dribbling does make him a bit better at it. This leads to the most frustrating little aspect about him, which is that he is also not 100% safe in controlling the ball, leading to 1 or 2 very frustrating goals. I presume its the 70 Dribbling and 75 Ball Control that cause this. Passing is not a problem, but I hoped for more with 88 Short Pass and 87 Long Pass available in his arsenal. I assume its the 46 Vision that cuts that down, but it only really matters when you try to play difficult passes, such as short lobbed ones under pressure and high long passes in behind.
On to the good:
Probably the best thing about him is that he is a really good, Grade A, classic defender. He has been in the right position countless times for me this WL and the key stats I want to pick out are the 99 Interceptions and 95 Def. Awareness WITH THE SHADOW. He does do the job, he catches passes in behind and has the legs and height to be a proper chopper. He also moves well when not controlled, compensating for the low pace by not getting caught out. With a boosted 97 Defending, this is exactly how I would expect it to be and he delivers. I guess this is also where his 84 Reactions and 86 Composure come in, making him a calm and strong tackler with the 99 Stand Tackle and 99 Sliding Tackle. With his 187 cm, the 83 Jumping and 94 Heading Accuracy he is also quite strong in the air. Not outstanding, but more than solid. The rest of his Physicals are also great with the 91 Stamina really letting him work well in the back even in the 120th minute. His stand-out stat in that department though is his 97 Aggression, which is key for his menacing defensive behavior where he really rips into players and gets the ball off them, similar to the elite behavior of Varane, Sergio Ramos or Van Dijk. Linkability is his other great strength, with Premier League, Portuguese and Man City links being available this year in abundance, with the most obvious ones, Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva, being perfect links.
How does he compare with the meta CBs?
Ruben Dias is a great card but does not reach the Centreback Olymp this year, simply because he lacks the pace and the absolute destructive ability that would make him comparable to the presidents of the no sweat defense society, like Varane. The pace does not matter in defensive behavior but in the recovery. Where Varane tackles Mbappé and immediately gets up in position or chases the Neymar that glitched the ball through a tackle in no time, Rúben Dias struggles.
How does he do against the Meta Attackers?
I already spoke about Mbappè and Neymar, but I want to give Rúben Dias some credit here: Those two are a special breed. But what about the other meta attackers you face every game? Rashford, CR7, Bruno Fernandes, Mané, Dybala, Rooney? Well, here I have to say, he did very good, was more than viable, actually a really strong option. As much as I complained about the pace, it only came to matter when chasing a player, not when defending from the back. Countless times he blocked a CR7 power shot from a weird angle, slid in to take the ball off a turbo-dribbling Rashford and pushed Rooney off the ball, just as the most elite defenders do.
Conclusio:
If Varane is an S-Tier Defender and Gomez an A+, then Rúben Dias is a strong A (for now) and that makes him simply overpriced right now (500k as of writing this review) and you can get other options for that money. But if you decide to go for him, he offers great physical presence and great tackling, and a calm and collected presence in your back-line, paired with easy linkability. My WL with him, contrary to all the criticism I am leveraging against the card, went actually really well and I do think its because of him and the safety he emanates from the back. He performed very solid defensively against the most meta attackers and icons and gave away no penalty. If you decide to give him a try, I would advise to pair him with a more pacey option to provide cover. Joe Gomez worked well for me and I presume any other 83+ base Pace defender will work too.
Big fella
menacing and aggressive tackling
great defensive presence (on both ground and air)
strong AI defense, interceptions and positioning
Great Links (Premier League, Portuguese and Man City)
Passing is very solid
Insane Stamina, Over-Time Champion
Nice Heading with Power-Header
Too slow to be FULL META
overpriced
can be sloppy on the ball, both when dribbling and recovering
Passing is not mesmerizing, even though stats are fairly high for a CB
When this card came out in the Future Stars promo, I really wanted to try him out since he fitted perfectly in my squad. I packed him in the party bag, and since that, he never left my team. His card is just amazing. His defending and positioning are sick, his physical is insane and his height is pretty decent too. Definitely one of the best PL's CBs.
