Rulebreaker Foden Review

With Rulebreaker Team 2 entering packs this Friday there was always going to be a variety of interesting review options.  However, it was definitely the city youngster Phil Foden who immediately caught the eye.  In truth, it feels weird calling Foden a young player given his extremely mature and dominating performances on the pitch… but regardless of age, I was hoping the addition of the England man could boost my squad back into the limelight of Rank I this weekend.  However, for a while it didn’t look like this review would happen as getting my hands on Foden proved rather difficult in the early stages and my Weekend League grinded to a halt.  But once the snipe was complete and the squad built there was no hesitation in placing Foden in a starting role in the CAM position of my 4-2-3-1.  The choice to go with an ENGINE chemistry style took zero time and it was off to the races for another Weekend League grind.  Unfortunately, though, Foden proved the be the lone bright spot all weekend in the following squad:

Starting Formation:

In-game Formation:

Overall

Rating: 8.5/10
Pace Rating: 9.5/10
Dribbling Rating: 9.5/10
Shooting Rating: 8/10
Passing Rating: 9/10
Physical Rating: 6/10
Defending Rating: N/A

The stats in this case tell only a small part of the story from this weekend's matches.  From the beginning it was a rocky start as using Gosens to link Kimmich proved a failed experiment… while Militao is certainly the worst value/coins player I have used.  A rocky start… which only turned worse as loss after loss (including my first D/C) piled up.  The lone bright spot? Foden’s 9 goals and 12 assists in 15 matches … “diamond in the rough” is a huge understatement for this one.

Main Statistic - Gerrardesque

Dribbling Rating: 9.5/10
Pace Rating: 9.5/10
Skills:
★★★★
Height: 171cm | 5’7

What a display of control and dynamic movement this lad demonstrated throughout the weekend!  The low center of gravity mixed with 93 AGILITY & 99 BALANCE created a left stick dribbler's dream card.  The responsiveness of the card mixed with his incredible quickness caused endless problems once I was able to get this man on the ball in and around the box.  “Pace” isn’t really the right rating for this card though as in general I wouldn’t say I felt Foden was fast… but at the same time was unbelievably quick on the ball.  The 95 ACCELERATION feels completely broken as Foden literally launches forward from the starting position and his first touch using the “explosive sprint” is devastating for defenders that are not reading your intentions.  From there the 91 SPRINT SPEED is enough that Foden doesn’t necessarily get caught up, but at the same time he certainly doesn’t pull away from anyone which can cause small issues.

Main Attribute - 3 ★ Weak Foot

Weak Foot: ★★★
Shooting Rating: 8/10

Now I know why Pep said, “we want a left foot on the left side and a right foot on the right side.”  It is such a shame that this card only boasts a 3 STAR WEAK FOOT because he could be a next-level CAM.  However, as my grandpa used to say, “close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades” and so Foden fell just short of what I would call the highest tier CAM.  As a LAM I could see this being less of a problem and like RB Diaby last week, Foden can really hit them for power on his left.  With the “big 4” all sitting at 90+: 91 POSITIONING, 90 FINISHING, 91 SHOT POWER & 90 LONG SHOTS … There is no denying he can find the back of goal, just with zero consistently on his right.  Side note: while I think Foden as a LAM would solve the weak foot issue, I am not sure he would have the same results as Diaby given his lack of pure speed and physicality… has anyone tried this?? Let me know in the comments.

Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad

Value/Coins Rating: 4/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4/5

From extinct at 500k… to a panic sold 450k… to a 580k rise … settling back closer to 500k and then ultimately decimated by the Rare Players Preview Pack back down to 400k this card has been through it all.  However, the one thing that remains through all of that is my firm belief that this card is overpriced by about 100k.  The issue is of course just how low everything else is and therefore the question remains… is RB Foden 4x better than some of the 100k CAM options.  The answer is no for me and even if “that is the price for the next level in FIFA 22”… then I would still argue that Foden is not quite that… give him a 4 STAR WEAK FOOT and then we could talk.

If the weak foot wasn’t enough to influence the value/coins, then the lack of any physical presence definitely is.  I understand that the trade off for a smaller card is the amazing dribbling and quickness mentioned earlier… but there are still cards that can do both, Foden not being one of them.  With 47 STRENGTH this was never going to be an asset… but just wanted to clarify it is definitely a hindrance.

Closing Words

There were certainly passengers in this week's squad who ultimately contributed to a poor weekend showing… and perhaps more help would have let Foden sprinkle more stardust on the team performances.  And don’t get me wrong, he was still immaculate on the ball and simply doesn’t miss on his left.  My ultimate point is just that I don’t think there is 400k worth of performance in this card regardless.  I loved the feel, movement and the dribbling was insane… but I still wouldn’t recommend spending 400k when there are so many comparables for less.  Hoping you are safe and well. Cheers for reading.

Foden A very nice player, I enjoy playing in Formation 4231 on CAM / ST, he is currently playing on N and doing Robota. I highly recommend testing this player because he is worth his money.

So I decided to try out Philip Fodon. I was greatly disappointed. Used him next behind Vardy and Werner in 5212 and was honestly terrible. He felt so slow on the ball and his free kicks where terrible. he is so disappointing. Really struggled to get past Nathan Ake. If I where you I would honestly just buy James Maddison.
