The RTTF promo is always one that catches the eye and brings that extra side-excitement to Europe’s grand stage. One simple goal can either send cards skyrocketing in price or dismantle the value of a card in seconds. Of course, this year has been slightly different with the two different versions of RTTF cards being released during the different stages of the competitions… and this time around there was a new batch of interesting options that hit the market this past Friday. New batch… same old cards, as there doesn’t seem to be a better combination than Renato Sanches and RTTF cards in the past few years. Truthfully it doesn’t seem to matter what card it is, Mr. FIFA was just built for this game and any version of the Lille man is always going to have that “it” factor regardless of statistics. It just so happens that this card is loaded with nightmarish statistics as well and certainly looked like a menace moving forward in the cycle. In attempting to link the Lille man with RTTF Bale there were some squad building challenges that brought me back to the 4-2-2-2 formation this weekend, with Renato dividing his time as both the Stay Back and Box to Box option, while the SHADOW chemistry style did the trick in both cases. Renato was the energizer bunny all weekend long in the following squad:
As I said, on paper Renato looked like a menace… and then in game he proved to be exactly that for my opponents throughout the weekend. From a defensive standpoint, there are not many better at covering ground to either close down opponents on the ball or close down spaces where they want to move the ball. With that in mind, I certainly enjoyed Renato as the Stay Back CDM over the Box to Box option where small limitations kept a perfect 10/10 overall out of the question. While Renato is a capable Box to Box option if that is your plan for using him, he certainly doesn’t impact a match the same way he can from a deeper role.
Main Statistic - Pace
Pace Rating: 10/10
Dribbling Rating: 9.5/10
Height: 176cm | 5’9
The trademark for this card always comes in the form of quickness and responsiveness which I can report he once again has in excess. The perfect 99 ACCELERATION & 99 SPRINT SPEED felt just as flawless in game as time and time again opponents on the ball underestimated the time it takes Renato to close down space. The speed doesn’t seem to slow at all when the Portuguese is on the ball and was a fantastic starting point for any counterattack. The 92 AGILITY & 96 BALANCE are just as important to both the defensive and offensive outputs and allow this card to boomerang around the pitch to where he is most needed.
Main Attribute - Defending
Defending Rating: 9.5/10
Physical Rating: 9.5/10
There is no surprise that with 90’s across the board that Renato has a physical impact on matches. The 90 STRENGTH powers through the height and weight difference to other players and there is no chance of this card being bullied on or off the ball. The smallest complaint would come in the aerial battles that were more often lost despite the 91 JUMPING but would be expected given his size. But then you look at the defensive statistics and even with all of my Renato experience in the past it still caught me off guard how flawless this card felt despite statistics that are certainly not perfect on paper. 93 INTERCEPTIONS, 92 STANDING TACKLE & 87 SLIDING TACKLE are not really “make you take notice” totals, but once again were impeccable in application.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 4/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4.5/5
This is where some might have an issue with this review but I have to just throw out my own experience and hope that you can see my reasoning. 1.4 million coins for a 9.5/10 card doesn’t seem outrageous to me, the card is great and has that nostalgic feeling from past FIFAs that can’t be denied. However, there is one card that causes Renato’s price to come into question… the other hair man himself, Matteo Guendouzi. I mentioned that Renato isn’t the greatest attacking CM, nor a Box to Box, but thrives as a Stay Back midfielder. But so does Guendouzi and his impact on the match is not much different than Renato’s on the whole. Before anyone loses their mind I am not saying that Guendouzi has all the attributes of Renato… but I can say with absolute certainty that if I was building a squad tomorrow, I would take the Frenchman in a heartbeat knowing he would do a job and free up coins for other areas of the pitch. Truthfully I would even go for Signature Signings Renato over the RTTF for the same reasons… but is certainly harder to link than the aforementioned Guendouzi.
The biggest complaints about this card came when I was playing him in the Box to Box role and more offensive attributes were put on display. The Pace, Dribbling & Physical are still there and cause endless problems for defenders trying to win back possession. But then the Passing and Shooting started to let down the end product compared to other options I have used. The 90 SHORT PASSING & 88 LONG PASSING are not bad by any means but could have been sharper in those dangerous areas. While the 99 SHOT POWER is absolutely insane regardless of which foot you hit them on… but unfortunately was often undone by the 75 FINISHING when in good scoring positions.
Closing Words
While some might question the ratings or my experience with this card, I think it would be a hard argument to deny that this card is in trouble from an upgrade perspective. Drawing the defending champions Chelsea in the Round of 16 means that the French side certainly has a battle on their hands. However, from a FIFA perspective, this might actually help this card in terms of price, as I could see a loss in the first leg dropping the value to something that becomes more enticing moving forward. Please don’t misconstrue my overview of this card though… I am 100% not saying that Renato is a nightmare to play against in those defensive areas of the pitch and can control a midfield beautifully… because he can. I am simply saying that there are others that can compare to the defensive contributions for a much cheaper price… and there are certainly others that do it better going forward. The card is fun… but it is expensive fun. Hoping you are well. Cheers for reading.
