Mid Rio Ferdinand
By LoftusBumCheeks, 09-01-2022

I have now used over 900 games with him now as I was lucky enough to pack him on release day and he still remains in my starting 11 as he is the best CB i have used in fifa 22. His mix of pace and good defending and physicality stats help him fit into the meta. He is a total of 7 icon swaps and i could not recommend him more and is an option you should consider as he is not as much of a grind as the likes of Del Piero, Zambrotta and Rooney. 88 reactions and 90 interceptions also means no through ball gets past him and obviously he links to everyone as he is an icon meaning he is useful for hybrids.

Incredible CB
By DeBruneey, 10-01-2022

I completed Rio Ferdinand with my 7 Icon Swap tokens, and I actually think he should be around 10 tokens as he is a really solid option for you at CB. I used him in a 4-3-1-2 in-game and used a shadow chem style as it was really the only logical option. You might see that I have used Rio for over 100 games, the only reason I am writing the review now is because I wanted to write one, but wasn't on who to write it on, then I thought why not do it on who is now a sort of club legend of mine. He was paired (most of the time) with Winter wildcards Cozza in the squad below.

Pace: 8/10

To be honest, if you are not using a shadow on him, then he won't be able to catch up with attackers like Flashback Benz and RTTK Fekir, who it seems like everyone and their nan is using. But with a shadow on him, he feels fairly fast and he will be able to catch up with players like those, his acceleration isn't ideal but with a shadow I haven't encountered any issues. He may not be as fast as CB's like Kimpembe and Marquinhos, who again everyone is using.

Shooting/Heading: 6/10

I obviously haven't encountered much of Ferdinand's shooting stats, as he mainly just heads it from corners. What I will say though, is that he is very good from corners, he is 6'2 and he can win headers against players like Kounde and Marquinhos, but won't be able to challenge players like Showdown Sule. You will also notice that he has 85 heading accuracy and 82 jumping which, is good for clearances and things like that.

Passing: N/A

Dribbling: N/A

Defending: 10/10

Defending is by far his best stat, and with a shadow his stats are just amazing. With a shadow he has 99 interceptions, slide tackle and standing tackle, with 94 Def. Awareness and 90 Heading Accuracy. These stats along with his decent pace, create an incredible CB, he rarely ever puts a foot wrong or ever misses a tackle. His interceptions are amazing and so is his defensive awareness.

Physicality: 9/10

Although his physicality stats don't look all that good on paper, they feel a lot better than they look. He can barge players off the ball and and his 85 strength feels so much better than it looks. He also has good aggression, the only thing bad about his physical stats is his stamina, which is 75 and this isn't ideal for a CB.

Absolute beast of a cb. Enough pace to keep up with any forward, great strength and defending. If you have the icon swaps tokens to get him, get him. He is the best cb ive used in probably any fifa. 6'2 is enough to win headers against pretty much an striker, his positioning is great as well, never to far forward or back. Interceptions are always on point. Would recommend getting him if you need a strong cb. Occasionally misses a pass but if you have a formation with a cdm or fullback that can deliver a perfect pass, its not a problem.

Slow and disappointing
By autem, 24-01-2022

I used him in pair with Varane and had high expectations due to exceptional reviews and feedbacks. However, I was disappointed by mid Ferdi. He feels clunky in game and is hard to control him. Moreover, he had cause many troubles when conceding crosses into the box, having lost his position or the player that later on scored a header. This are the main disadvantages of him. On the other hand, he is good at 1v1 situations and can easily win an average striker in physicality, but if he plays against a BenYedder/Vini/DiNatale he will lose them due to slow speed. I recommend you to choose packs instead of Fergi to the possibility.

Good at 1v1

Good interceptions

Sometimes good positioning

Bad at aerial duels

Slow and clunky (even with shadow)

Hard to defend with

Passing sometimes is awful

Slow but solid
By WICK6DKR6ATUR6, 29-01-2022

Rio Ferdinand is the biggest waste of icon swaps tokens that you could possibly use. I know what I said. Although he can defend, at this stage of the game (30/01/2022), he is too slow. Now I'm not some meta rat, but I don't enjoy conceding goals based on pure pace. I was nearly humiliated in a game vs an opponent using Diaby SIF because mid Ferdinand does not have the pace to provide adequate cover. At this very moment, I am using a backline consisting of the defensive pairing of Collins WW and Akanji IF. And although I had to replace my defensive casanova WW Semedo with WW Azpilicueta to link Ziyech, it was worth it just to replace Ferdinand with a superior cb in Akanji. I won't lie, the best partnership my mid Ferdinand ever had was with the very pacy WW Collins. This is simply because Ferdinand has neither the pace nor the physicality to thwart many of the attackers that are now in this game.

On the positive side of things, Rio hardly misses a tackle. At least, when he is there to be able to make the tackle.

Personally I play with a high defensive line, so mid Rio absolutely does not fit my tactic. However I do see potential for success with this card if you play with a deep(er) line.

All in all, I would say that the lack of versatility with this card due to its lack of pace renders it useless to me. Competitively speaking, a cb like this will not do the job. During this WL I frequently found myself having to sub off this card for Showdown Darmian, which grew tiresome for me.
