Are you considering using him as CDM? Well, think about it again. His defending is top of the world, but you won't notice the differences in terms of defending capabilities between mid, prime, and moment. Any version of Matthaus can just get the defending job done for you. His moment has super juiced up shooting and dribbling stats and if you play him at CDM you are wasting his talents. Let me tell you the truth, he is the best gladiator-style CAM in this game, period. His long shots are flawless thanks to his outside foot shot trait and 99s in the related areas. Create space for him via tikitaka outside of the penalty area and then pass the ball to him, load the power bar to 3-3.5 bars, and bang, the singularity of the universe explodes and Matthaus scores a long shot as fast as the light travels in the vacuum. His long shots are so accurate and powerful that you don't even need to green time your finishing. He scored 13 superb long shots in 20 weekend league games and 2 power free kicks. Multiple opponents quit the game immediately after seeing the real shit he bangs. On top of that, his defending is also flawless. Playing him at CAM in a 352 or 41212 makes him face directly towards your opponents' center backs. If they have sluggish passes or dribbles, Matthaus just auto-defends for you and converts your opponent's counterattacks to your scoring opportunities. It's even better if you set his tactics to free roam and come back to defense. Last but not least, he is the most diligent player on the pitch (yes way more diligent than the other players with high/high work rates). He covers the entire pitch during both the offense and defense yet he is never caught off guard or off position like what the division 10 central back nominee Kounde usually does. On average, my players run 7.8 km per game. Yet Matthaus can handle a 14 km run and does not drain his stamina below yellow. He is simply magnificent. I hope that next year EA could give him four-star skill moves, which will make him perfect in all areas.
- His run covers every single corner of the pitch both in offense and defense but his stamina never runs out
- His power free kicks and long shots are as fast as how light travels in the vacuum
- Left stick dribbling is way better than his other versions, feels agile and responsive on the ball
- Intercepts every single pass your opponent's sluggish central defenders send out
- Passing is very accurate
- Physically strong thanks to his high aggression
- Three-star skill move but you can get away with the slow animations it using skill move cancels
I play him in 4-1-2-1-2(2) as right CM alongside Toni Kroos FBirthday and Veratti FB in the CDM, in the CAM Fekir FBirthday and in the storm Eto Prime and Cruyff Prime.
He's just a bomb! Works well backwards and also well forwards. His long shots from the second row are the best! I personally feel that his talent is wasted in CDM and he doesn't necessarily fit as a CAM with 3* skills, CM is the best position for him!
I pulled him from the 93+ Moments Pack in the middle of my WL. Put him in the team and won 9 out of the remaining 11 WL games.
You can't go wrong with him in the CM, his CPU is awesome! He is always in the right position and has extremely good tacles, he also makes great runs to the front!
If you pull it from an icon pack, or have the money, definitely a recommendation!

About a month ago I did an Icon moments pack hoping for something good considering my previous shocking packs. Luckily for me this bad boy showed up and I was in disbelief. So I gave him an engine and fit him in. If your one of them players that love to score amazing bangers Matthaus is your guy. The guy can shoot from anywhere given his 99 longshots and 99 shot power. Furthermore his freekicks, he has scored one from about 35 yards out. All one has to do is aim it in a corner and green time it and it will just go in. Just like Roberto Carlos. His pace i'd say is good enough for a midfield position, however playing him on the wing in a 3 5 2 is not the best option as he may get outpaced. In terms of his passing, it rivals my TOTS De Bruyne, he doesn't seem to miss a pass and is a fundamental player in my build up play. Now, his defending is exquisite. He has lovely tackling animations and is very good at high pressing. His physicality, considering his strength to be 79 he may be bullied off the ball by taller opponents, so I would suggest not trying to get into those tight suitations, as his 3 star skills may make it hard to escape. However he never gets tired due to his 95 stamina and his 94 aggression is key in those Brexit tackles. Also, his dribbling is nice and smooth however he does have 3 star skills so it may be a turn off to others. Overall, if anyone wants a box to box cm/cdm/rb Matthaus is your man.

He's exactly what you'd expect of him. Great defender, crazy movement all over the pitch, great passing, amazing long shots, good finishing in the box and solid physically. He does almost everything right. The one thing I'd say is his dribbling feels a little weird at times with some bad touches. But that could be blamed on the shitty servers.
You can play him as CM or CDM. Fantastic in both positions but as a CDM you won't be able to make as much use of his forward capabalities.
