When I first saw the Out of Position card design, and the leaked cards in the promo, I was really wondering who would be the SBC player. And then on Friday at 6PM, OOP there it was (if you don’t get that joke, ask your elders). SBC Federico Chiesa is here with a cracking upgrade and one of the all time card designs.
Check out the card! - Chiesa 87
A superb +3 on his fiendishly difficult to defend 84 card and a shift from a left sided only player to a right sided player who can also play CAM, this card has all the makings of a staple Serie A winger. The shift to the right side is not only a good option for squad building, but being right footed and with Outside of the Foot Shot trait, he’s like a reincarnated Quaresma, trivellas from everywhere!

If you’ll indulge me, I would like to just pick up on a comment from the Sheraldo Becker SBC review. “If it’s expensive you say flop, cheap you say cop”. Firstly, obviously.
Secondly, SBC players should never be looked at like market players in my opinion. Once you have completed an SBC, you only have that card as fodder in return value. Therefore, this early in the game cycle, with no League SBC’s to grind fodder, an SBC requiring an investment of over 300k has a very difficult time convincing me that it’s a worthwhile investment.
Thirdly, when an SBC requires an 83 and an 84-rated squad, it is likely that most people can halve the cost of the SBC with players they have in the club already. When you get 86 and 87 rated squads, the chances are that you can only knock 5-10% off that price. It is far more of a coin sink than completing an SBC that requires 5 or 6 83’s to be purchased.
Moving on to this card. I genuinely think EA have nailed this price. I actually think most SBC’s this year have been very well-priced when compared to the market. This card absolutely warrants being the 12th or 13th most expensive Serie A player. In a market where OOP Theo Hernandez is somehow commanding 327k, this arguably feels like a steal. Definitely has value for coins.
OOP Chiesa SBC Analysis
The card itself is a stunner. No dynamic is a little sad but the stats are more than sufficient medicine for that. With +3, +4 and +5 in Dribbling, Shooting and Passing respectively, this is one of the biggest glow ups since Potter moved to Chelsea. A technical tapestry of tasty talents, this card can be whatever you need it to be in attack.
If you want him to run the wing for you, an engine or artist chem style put his passing stats in the high 80’s with superb dribbling and base 85 shooting. If you want to move him to striker in game, a finisher elevates his shooting to insane levels. 94 positioning, 99 finishing, 92 shot power with 99 agility, 99 dribbling is a scary prospect.
But is he lengthy? Despite a solid 74 base strength, no.
Naturally explosive, if you are on new gen and really feel like you need at least controlled, architect, hawk and marksman are all superb options here. Giving him superb passing, pace and shooting/dribbling respectively, you can pick your poison here. For me, I think you can lean into his explosiveness here. I do feel as though the clunkier attackers are beginning to be found out a little as people gain the defenders to keep up with them.
However I think the fact that you can add so many different chemstyles to this card displays the solid base stats that he possesses. A true attacker all rounder that you can mould to fit whatever position you need filling in your front line.
How Does He Compare?
Well, is the answer. His price point puts him with IF Leao, OTW Dybala and around 40k cheaper than Hero Nakata. With 4 star weak foot and skill moves he can match up against all of the attackers around him. High/Medium work rates are perfect, especially if you like “come back on defence” wingers.
If you narrow down your search to just right sided attacking players, this card stands out. OOP Theo can play RW in the same way I technically play the same sport as Messi, I can try, but it’s not great. Brolin is the only player that can really hold a candle to Chiesa here and at 100k more expensive, I think Chiesa is the obvious option.
Outside of Serie A, arguably his biggest competition is another SBC player in RB Insigne. Despite somehow being half a foot smaller than a player who’s 5’9, Insigne matches up fairly well. He absolutely obliterates Chiesa in the passing category, and whilst he does give up some pace and some dribbling (and a LOT of physical), for 38k, Insigne could be a better budget option if you can link him.
Which is a perfect segue to talk about Chiesa’s links! With Piemonte Calci…old habits…Juventus likely to receive plenty of special cards this year (although with the way they are performing, most likely not performance based specials), linking this Chiesa will get easier as the year progresses. With RB Bonucci, Szczesny and RTTK Bremer already offering very solid options, the club link should be easy to add.
With the Italian link, not only do you have a plethora of cheap icons to select from, you can also use penalty king Donnarumma, the massively overlooked TOTW Barella and the recently released, how is he still at Sassuolo, OOP Berardi all offer superb options.
Even on a league level, with 7 Heroes, the recently expired Bologna dynamic duos, and some of the best value for coins specials in the game, getting 2 Serie A segments of chemistry should be very easy! Chiesa links so well, even Anne Robinson would be voted off the Weakest Link before him.
Out of Position Chiesa SBC - Cop or Flop?
At 85% upvoted, this is one of the best received SBC’s we’ve had in FIFA 23. EA have absolutely smashed this SBC, a great price point for a brilliant player.
Now usually here, I highlight a comment made on the player page that either agrees or disagrees with my conclusion. However, on this occasion, the top comment is so bizarre and leaves so many questions needing to be answered, I’m just going to leave it here and move on.
Having played 15 games with this Chiesa, I think he’s absolutely superb. However I played 10 games on New Gen and 5 on Old Gen. And what I will say is, if you are on old gen, this is pushing “must complete” territory. He’s absolutely unplayable. New gen, the accelerate style takes some of that sheen off but he’s brilliant still.
If adding a technically brilliant winger to your team is key, a savvy move would be to complete this SBC (if you clocked it first time, I thank you).
