The 2022 World Cup is running and we took a look at all the former winners and their clubs at that moment in time to find out which club has produced the most World Cup winners ever.
In the article you can see the key findings and the complete dataset is linked under the methodology section.
Juventus is leading - no Premier League club is in top 10
As you can see in the graphic, Juventus is the team that have had the most World Cup winners ever with 25.
Juventus had five players on the national team when Italy won the World Cup back in 2006. Roma had three players on the national team in the same World Cup.
Bayern Munich is the runners up with 24 World Cup winners. When Germany won the World Cup back in 2014 there were seven Bayern Munich players in the squad.
But it's actually worth noticing that there are only five European teams on the top 10 list, while there are also five teams from South America.
No big six teams in the top 10
You might wonder, where are all the big six teams from the Premier League on the list? Nowhere near the top 10 is the answer. Arsenal is, with seven players, number 24 on the list, while Manchester City, with one player, is rock bottom of the list of clubs that have actually had a World Cup winner in their squad.
This might be changed in the future as the clubs in the Premier League are more likely to buy players from overseas than in the past and will for sure also be increased if England wins the World Cup.
No matter what, it will be interesting to see which club will have the most World Cup winners this year, and who knows? Maybe, Bayern Munich will be able to surpass Juventus.
Methodology:
The way we have done to find all the numbers is quite straightforward. We have analysed historical World Cup winners to find the club they played for when they won the World Cup.
