FIFA 23 Road to the World Cup Matheus Nunes Player Review

The past few weeks we have been focusing on some top-tier high-end cards that have been released… equipped with plenty of attributes and statistics, and even bigger price tags.

The idea was one where if FUT Managers are spending or saving a pile of coins for one card, that they would want some intel regarding the quality before making the investment.  However, some of the comments have expressed a desire to see some more affordable options… We heard you, and this week we paired the extravagance of Heung Min Son alongside the thrift of Matheus Nunes.

Nunes continues to be one of the more popular cards searched on FUTBIN suggesting that there is either a lot of interest, or perhaps the pack weight is quite high and everyone is looking to sell… this would make sense and would explain why his price has fallen so dramatically.

Right off the start the statistics with this card were eye-catching as the Portuguese midfielder is only three base shooting statistics off of Gullit Gang numbers. But once you dive a little deeper into the card there is a lot to be desired with the 3 STAR/3 STAR totals and a complete lack of attributes.

The stage was set for Nunes to take his place as the box to box midfielder in my 4-2-2-2 formation… The application of the ANCHOR chemistry style was added in hopes that the Wolves man could play the main act in my midfield all weekend.

Matheus Nunes proved that money isn’t everything all weekend long in the following squad:

Starting Squad

In-Game Squad

Overall

Rating: 8.5/10

Pace Rating: 9/10

Dribbling Rating: 8/10

Shooting Rating: 8/10

Passing Rating: 9/10

Physical Rating: 9/10

Defending Rating: 10/10

The best compliment I could pay this card is that he performs exactly as his statistics would suggest, almost entirely across the board. The price tag should not deter anyone looking at this card as a possible option in their squad… he delivers everything that would make you consider using him in the first place.

The box-to-box role in the 4-2-2-2 has not delivered nearly as many goals as it has for me in FIFA’s past. But with Nunes I felt an added contribution to my attack and was often popping up in dangerous areas, without compromising defensive cover.

The amount of RTFWC cards that are at the bottom of their price ranges suggests that EA didn’t expect them to keep dropping like this. The benefit for a card like Nunes is that you can try him just about risk free… The 2000 coin tax when you sell is the only price to pay for a test drive. I should add that I said “just about risk-free” due to the fact that some FUT Managers have struggled to sell cards that have bottomed out.

Main Statistics – Defending

Defending Rating: 10/10

This card doesn’t just do a job in the middle of the pitch… Nunes goes to war match in and match out and was a big part of why I enjoyed this review so much.

As a box-to-box CM this was a key part of the balance in my squad and the 90 INTERCEPTIONS broke up a lot of my opponent's play before they even got started.

When play progressed out of my opponent's end I was quite impressed with the tracking on this card… Nunes has that relentless pursuit that you see in a lot of the best midfielders. The 91 STANDING TACKLE was impressive and seemed immune to the “soft feel” of challenges since the patch. There is no doubt in my mind that this card would excel in a more defensive role as well.

Value/Coins

Value/Coins Rating: 5/5

I don’t know how much lower this card could have dropped without the min. price range, but the 45k floor seems crazy low.

When you type the minimum base statistics for Nunes into FUTBIN you get a grand total of two players from the results… the man himself, and 93 Ruud Gullit, which is insane.  Obviously these totals are not everything, but there is a lot to like about the total package you get with this card.

Good vs. Bad

Good vs Bad Rating: 4/5

With all of those statistics you are bound to hit some categories where Nunes was going to operate on the highest level and here were the results:

+ This card is not rapid by any means and the 89 ACCELERATION on a CONTROLLED AcceleRATE type is nothing special. But the 91 SPRINT SPEED is something else and this card covers some serious ground when tracking down opponents.

+ The passing continues to be hit and miss with different cards and with Nunes it was back to the welcome realization that he outpasses the majority of his statistics. The 88 SHORT PASSING was perfect after winning tackles and moving out of dangerous areas… While in open spaces the 85 VISION & 85 LONG PASSING picked out a lot of key, line breaking passes.

+ Nunes’ 183cm | 6’0 frame is in large part why I think he can get going so quickly while sprinting, but also a big reason why his 89 STRENGTH was so effective throughout the review. The card has a power about it that simply gets the job done defensively.

I mentioned that 93 Gullit was the only parallel in the FUTBIN search and it does speak to how wide ranging the statistics are with Nunes… but there are a few areas where despite the statistics, the output were poor.

- The size of this card is huge for boosting the pace, defending, and physical performance in game… but was also a prime suspect for deteriorating the dribbling performance as well. Despite having 91 DRIBBLING and otherwise decent statistics… it felt like the size, 80 AGILITY & 81 BALANCE all negatively impacted this cards movement.

- The shooting with Nunes is just generally poor and would be a huge separation from some of the more expensive CMs. The 84 SHOT POWER is respectable but the positives just about stop there… 77 FINISHING, 74 LONG SHOTS & 62 VOLLEYS are all quite poor and are responsible for the 3 goal total. The 86 POSITIONING gets Nunes where you want, but the end product was rather disappointing.

- I mentioned the 3 STAR/3 STAR and complete lack of attributes… Worth noting that these are also prime contributors to the weak dribbling and shooting results as well.

Closing Words

If all we did was look at the price and discuss value, this would be the easiest review of the year.  The squads in Weekend League have reached borderline madness and Nunes went toe to toe with some of the best and was largely effective.

This review was a solid reminder that there are still cheap beasts out there that can contribute in a big way.  Of course if you pay 200k for the likes of WCH Park Ji-sung and certainly if you pay the 4 million for the likes of 90 Gullit they will perform beyond what Nunes was able to reach this weekend.

Yet, these cards are not accessible to the majority of FUT Managers and if anything this review served as a solid reminder that there are so many unique and quality cards out there for reasonable prices and easy to acquire, link, and then use.
