As the World Cup draws to a close this weekend, with Argentina facing off against France/Morocco, it’s time to start looking ahead to our World Cup Team of the Tournament Predictions, and the promo that is heavily rumoured to be arriving.
The Team of the Tournament event will bring to a close all of the World Cup festivities in FIFA 23 Ultimate Team, following WC Path To Glory, Road to the World Cup, WC Stories and the latest WC Phenoms promotions.
How would you rate the World Cup content in FUT this year?
What is the World Cup Team of the Tournament Promo?
As the name suggests, the Team of the Tournament event will feature a squad of the best performers at the 2022 World Cup, throughout the entire competition.
It’s worth noting, that the World Cup Team of the Tournament can still feature nations that have been knocked out and are no longer in the competition, so don’t expect a team full of Argentina, France & Morocco internationals.
Given that we’re getting closer to Team of the Year, expect the Team of the Tournament cards to see some significant boosts in rating to reflect their high-level achievements at the 2022 World Cup.
World Cup Team of the Tournament Release Date
While we’ve had no official confirmation as to whether the next promo is Team of the Tournament, the FUT Social Media rumour mill has been turning extensively, with many people speculating that it will be next up.
We have a promotion confirmed for Friday, December 16th, likely running for one week up until December 23rd and some Christmas festivities, we expect the TOTT event to slot in here nicely, wrapping up the World Cup event neatly before the festive period gets under way.
World Cup Team of the Tournament Predictions
Despite several shock sides emerging deep into the knockout rounds the likes of Messi, Mbappe and Modric still find themselves among the very best.
Yassine Bounou - GK - 84 > 89 OVR
The goalkeeper decision was easy to make during the group stage and while Szczesny could still end up making this side, I have decided to jump ship and go with Morocco’s Bounou. Morocco has conceded just once this tournament, managing to fend off the likes of Portugal and Spain to become the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final.
Theo Hernandez - LB - 85 > 90 OVR
The first of three French players I have selected for this side is Theo Hernandez. With a TOTT side, multiple players from one side are always likely, just like with TOTS. Three I do feel is the limit though seeing as we are still only at the semi-final stage. Hernandez didn’t look set to feature until an injury to his sibling occurred. He has taken the opportunity well showing the form he manages for AC Milan at an international level.
Josko Gvardiol - CB - 81 > 88 OVR
For the second consecutive World Cup Croatia found themselves in a Semi-final, exceeding expectations once again. Croatia has offered very little going forward, having scored only six goals over their five fixtures, including four against Canada. Their success has largely been down to the defensive side of their game and Gvardiol has shown exactly why he is highly rated in the Bundesliga. The youngster has thrown himself into last-ditch tackles and stopped promising attacks time and time again.
Harry Maguire - CB - 81 > 88 OVR
With both Saka and Bellingham featuring in the current promotion, it would suggest that they will both be snubbed for TOTT. England will inevitably feature though thus Maguire seems to be among the best candidates. His performances at the back have been solid throughout showing why Southgate remained loyal to him despite some questionable performances for United so far this season.
Nahuel Molina - RB - 78 > 86 OVR
I would expect all four semi-finalists to feature at least twice within this side and outside of Messi the Argentine is a difficult one. You could argue a case for Enzo however with a recent showdown SBC I would expect that is a hint away from him. I have taken a punt with Molina, who scored against the Netherlands and assisted against Poland
Casemiro - CDM - 89 > 92 OVR
Brazil came into this tournament as the favourites and everything was suggesting that to be the case early on. Despite taking the lead during extra time it wasn’t enough to defeat Croatia. That limits the options for this side but Casemiro has still been one of the stand-out midfielders in my eyes thus remaining in my prediction.
Luka Modric - CM - 88 > 93 OVR
When you look at the Croatia side on paper very few stand out with Modric being the only player you would expect to get remotely close to a side like this pre-tournament. With another semi-final reached they have a flurry of options, mainly defensive. Despite being 37 years of age now Modric continues to control games with his phenomenal passing ability. I already mentioned that he was named MOTM in two of the three group stage games and his performances continued into the knockouts, although not picking up any more MOTM awards.
Bruno Fernandes - RW - 86 > 92 OVR
Fernandes was originally a CAM from my previous prediction but having played both knockout matches down the right-hand side I would expect that to end up being his position. Portugal was shocked by Morocco during their quarter-final matchup but Fernandes has still done enough for me to be included having scored twice and assisted another three across the tournament.
Kylian Mbappe - LM - 91 > 95 OVR
Building upon his dominance in the group stage Mbappe ran the show against Poland, scoring twice and assisting another during their 3-1 win. Although Walker managed to keep the Frenchman quiet on Saturday, with five goals and three assists Mbappe walks into the side.
Lionel Messi - ST - 91 > 95 OVR
This World Cup was widely expected to be Messi and Ronaldo’s final one, with the hope of both meeting in the final. Ronaldo has had a tournament to forget but Messi has starred game after game somewhat carrying Argentina through time and time again. With five goals and three assists to his name, he has contributed to eight of Argentina’s twelve goals on his route to the final.
Will he cement his legacy as the goat?
Oliver Giroud - ST - 82 > 89 OVR
With the news of both Benzema and Nkunku having to withdraw through injury for France, it gave 36-year-old Giroud the chance to lead the line. It is something he has excelled upon, becoming France’s record goal scorer after his four during the tournament. Scoring in both knockout fixtures his performances have spearheaded France to the semi-finals.
Dominik Livakovic - GK - 80 > 89 OVR
Although two goalkeepers in this side seem a stretch it’s something that seems more than realistic given the options we have. The second I have selected is Livakovic, who only conceded three penalties across the two shoot-outs Croatia has survived. His fantastic performance against Brazil, making eleven saves tipped the scales for me.
Romain Saiss - CB - 77 > 87 OVR
In truth, the entire Morroccan defence could easily make its way into this side. Although Hakimi was the strongest option with him featuring in the current promotion I have opted against him and instead gone centrally with Saiss. As mentioned already Morrocco has only conceded one goal this tournament so far and their defensive resilience has frustrated sides well. Saiss also has a goal to his name thus getting the nod over Aguerd.
Sofyan Amrabat - CM - 76 > 87 OVR
A lot of the players likely to feature in a side like this will be those among the goals, especially outside of the defence but Amrabat has stood out for Morocco without those. His fight for every ball and ability to take on players in the middle of the park has won over neutrals and although he is far from guaranteed to make this side I feel he is among the best Moroccan options.
Cody Gakpo - ST - 83 > 90 OVR
It’s difficult to justify someone solely on group stage matches for a team of the tournament but I do feel that will have to be the case for a couple of options, Gakpo being one of them. The Dutchman scored in all three group stage matches while putting in a respectable performance against USA before Netherlands crashed out to Argentina in dramatic fashion.
