For weeks now I have been playing around with the 4-1-2-1-2(2) formation in Division Rivals for this very moment. In the past, using a player like FUT Future Stars Emile Smith Rowe during a review would have meant unfairly sliding the Arsenal man into the striker position of my 4-2-2-2 formation… or placing him in a less influential LAM/RAM spot. However, with the 4-1-2-1-2(2) I was able to play ESR as the CAM and truly get a feel for how he operated in those highly congested areas of the pitch. While I could see some FUT Managers opting to play ESR as a striker based on his size and finishing… I just feel like there are much better options suited for that position. Regardless of positioning I immediately opted for the FINISHER chemistry style to add those subtle dribbling and shooting boosts… both of which played a huge role in the success I experienced with this card over the weekend. Play him where you want, add whatever chemistry you want, in the end, you will have an interesting card on your hands. Emile Smith Rowe was the driving midfield force all weekend long in the following squad:
These Future Stars are juiced and their impact on the game has been instant. Vlahovic was one of the most complete strikers I have used. I see nothing but constant praise for the likes of Bellingham across my timelines. Konate would make me second guess Varane if I hadn’t already completed him. And then ESR entered his name into the mix as a viable CAM option with a ton of upside to how he operates in game. The card might not be perfect, but it certainly isn’t one I am forgetting about now that the review is complete.
Main Statistic - Shooting
Shooting Rating: 10/10
Weak Foot: ★★★★★
If you read the Vlahovic review then you would know that his shooting was not the finished product and I mentioned his weak foot as a primary reason. The second reason was that ESR was busy demonstrating exactly what a 10/10 shooting rating looks like throughout the weekend, and Vlahovic simply couldn’t keep up. When I saw the 5 STAR WEAK FOOT upgrade I was interested to see just how much of a difference the improvements would make. The answer is one heck of a lot. ESR is one of the most two footed players I have used in terms of velocity and accuracy… which are a really nice combination and a recipe for goals. With a perfect 99 rating in FINISHING & SHOT POWER it should have been expected, but you just never know… but now you do. The 87 LONG SHOTS were also impressive and at the very least resulted in corners as keepers scrambled to deal with the power. 10 goals in 15 games from a midfield role is exactly the contribution I needed considering the lack of a LAM and RAM chipping in… and ESR delivered those goals with a touch of class and a smile.
I am not sure why, but I was under the impression that ESR was a lot shorter than his 182 cm | 6’0 frame would suggest. In fact, I have been using so many smaller options throughout my reviews that I couldn’t believe the size of this card in game. Immediately I had some concerns about how the Arsenal lad would operate, but was soon relieved as I felt the responsiveness of the left stick dribbling and the injection of pace out of those silky dribbles. 98 AGILITY & 94 BALANCE are a perfect description of how this card feels in game… right up there with some of the best, but not perfect despite the advertised 99 DRIBBLING. Similarly, the 94 ACCELERATION & 93 SPRINT SPEED is both quick and fast, but not to the level of cards you would normally use as the benchmark for these categories.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 4.5/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4.5/5
680k is starting to get into the level of some excellent cards in FIFA 22. Cards that you see game in and game out across the Weekend League grind and consistently perform at the top levels. I am not sure I would mention ESR in those categories and I would be surprised if FUT Managers who have used ESR would argue with me. The card has moments (especially when shooting the ball) that make you think this card is special, but equally as many moments that others simply “do it better”.
After being caught off guard by the size of ESR in game (and of course real life) I was almost instantly annoyed with how weak he felt in game. For the size of this card, I would have thought the 81 STRENGTH was enough to fend off challenges and produce space in situations where it is required. Unfortunately, I found ESR to be a little on the weak side when getting into challenges and overall was dispossessed more often than not. Once I caught on to the lack of strength I did start moving the ball a lot quicker in transition and soon found that the 96 SHORT PASSING & 89 LONG PASSING felt crisp and accurate. I would add that only 5 assists felt more like a by-product of playing further back as a CAM than a result of poor distribution.
Closing Words
With more Future Stars to come and so many options currently available in game I would probably suggest you pass on this card in the end. However, if you are in the market for a CAM that can produce goals from both feet, needing English links, or simply an Arsenal supporter then I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. That is the nature of the FIFA beast at this point in the cycle… even a good card with a 9/10 rating doesn’t quite pip those high flyers in the majority of squads. If you are using ESR in other positions or with different chemistry styles I would love to hear about it in the comments. For the rest of you, I hope you are safe and well. Cheers for reading.
I'm not a top FIFA player, and I don't play that much. I was lucky enough to pack him from an 80+ PP. I built a team around him but the best I could do was get him on 8 chem. And my god was he an absolute monster. He finishes wonderfully with both feet and was a crucial part of my team this weekend. I can't talk much about the value for coins because I packed him untradeable. His passing and finishing are top tier. His left stick dribbling isn't the best but got the job done.
