I packed Diego Maradona out of a mid icon SBC some time ago. Right now I have played 176 games with him. So I thought the time was right for a review on him! I'll first start of with the positives and then talk about the negatives. But I can spoil to you already that the latter is outmatched.
I use him as a LCAM. This because shooting to the opposite side of the goal is very effective and he would have his dominant foot do it when that is the case. The squadlink is my ingame formation, but for mobile users it is as follows: 4222, defence who cares, controlling mid TOTY Kevin Gold Kante, LCAM Diego, RCAM Baby Garrincha, LS Mid Cruyff, RS Prime Pele. Yes I have pack luck. This indeed means I am absolutely horrible at FIFA. I am currently climbing div. 2 and I average 11/9 in WL.
POSITIVES:
Free kicks:
My absolute favourite thing about Mid Maradona are his free kicks. Before he came into my squad I had only scored one free kick with a baby Ronaldinho in some squad battle. Right now I have scored 6 more, all with Diego. He just places that ball right where you want him to. You don´t need to do your fancy curves, or drop or knuckleball. When it is close, just place it where you want it and time it. Often times it even goes in when you yellow time it as well. When it is green, it is almost certain. This makes it very enjoyable to me. I tend to get a big smile when I get a free kick near the penalty area because I know Maradona has the ability to draw a goal out of the locker right then and there.
Dribbling:
My second favourite thing about Diego is the way he moves when he has the ball. It feels like the ball is literally glued to his feet. You want to quickly turn there to lose a defender? No problem. Want to do a skill whilst keeping the ball close enough? No problem. Want to kick the ball ahead with R3 just enough but not too much? No problem. It is like he reads your mind with your movements. Yeah duh, you control him of course, but the way he feels with dribbling is a thing of beauty.
Finesse shot
He has the finesse shot trait. Need I say more? You all know how that works by now, but to be sure I'll tell you: it is the stuff of dreams. Green time a finesse outside of the box with a player with good curve and boom, goal. Well Maradona's base curve is 94 and he also has decent shot power: 83, and 89 with full chem and a Hunter.
Shooting:
Maradona is lethal in front of goal. Sure he might not have the highest base shot power, but his base finishing is incredible. 94 and 99 with a Hunter. If he misses with his left foot in the penalty area, it is surely your fault.
Agility & Balance:
A huge factor in this year's game. Well, needless to say Diego has it and he has it good. 98 balance and 89 agility is more than enough for him to feel amazing on the ball. In the rare occasions I do create my chances with dribbling, it is always Diego that makes them succeed for me.
Positioning:
Maradona for me is always at the right place at the right time. You're running down the wing, and you want to pass it into the penalty area. Maradona is there, completely free. With no defenders around him it is very easy for him to take a light touch and smash it in the net.
Skills:
He has both 5 star skills and flair. I am not much of a skiller myself, but it is nice to be able to do those elastico's. They tend to lose defenders very nice this year in my opinion.
NEGATIVES:
Stamina:
He doesn't have too much stamina. This isn't that worrying for me, so it is not really a con. But I can understand if it were troubling for others. If he were to play as a striker instead of a CAM, I could see his stamina running out way quicker for you.
3* WF:
This is a more troubling con for me. I rarely come across it since I just make him always shoot with his left foot, and the passes he gives with his right are fine. But if you use him as a central CAM or striker, it could maybe be troubling?
Long story short:
This is my favourite card in the game. Why? Not because he is the best. There are way better cards out there. I don't know, I just get a certain joy having this man in my team and doing some magic sometimes. Is he worth the money? To try him out for fun he is worth it. But there are better CAM alternatives out there for cheaper prices. Also if you want a good weak foot, I'd look elsewhere if I were you. For me he is a club legend and he will stay in my squad.
To put things into perspective, I am an elite player but rather than sweat every single game, I prefer to simply have fun in the game. It means that I like testing out different players and playstyles and in my reviews I always try my best to honour every single player, especially icons.
That being said, think of this more as a player tribute than a player review.
We all love a good promo card but this Maradona card right here is just on a whole different level.
Ball control and dribbling are some of the best in the entire game, and rightfully so. Maradona was one of a kind magician and luckily his card represents that in the game.
I played him central CAM with "free roam" in 4-2-3-1 or as a left striker with "false 9" instruction in 4-2-2-2. In both cases I used hunter chem style and also "stay forward" and "conservative interceptions" instructions due to his lower 75 stamina. You simply do not want to deplete his limited physical fund elsewhere but in attack because that is where he shines most.
Some of you might be wary of 3 star weak foot but I am convinced his high shooting and passing stats make up for it, since for me he distributed passes and scored flawlessly with his right foot as well.
"A picture is worth a thousand words." In this particular case it is an absolutely fitting adage since some of the stuff he did for me on the pitch is indescribably good and simply needs to be seen. Therefore I compiled a short video with highlights and you will find it attached to the review as always.
If you managed to pack this card from mid icon player picks or other icon upgrades, congratulations. You are in for a treat. Otherwise this card is still sporting a rather hefty price tag of around 1.5 mil - but nonetheless is worth every penny.
So i´ve packed Maradona in the Mid Icon upgrade and thought I packed one of the best players in the game. So I put him in my team and played the first games straight away with him as ST beacause i hate it to play with a CAM. Before I played Maradona, I played Butragueno and Di Natale and now use them as a comparison. So the first problem are the 3* WF and ingame he is not that fast that he can "overtake" the CB like Kimpembe or Cozza. In some situations where a goal has to be scored, Maradona shoots the keeper and leaves the chance unused. The Shooting of Di Natale, Butragueno and of his current partner in ST Neymar was simply better in the end. So if you want to play it, I advise you to play him at CAM.
