FC 24 Golazo Eric Cantona Player Review - Cop or Flop

Week number two of the Golazo promo and i’ve gotta say things have certainly felt like they have started to die down a little. So a fresh new team and fresh new content is just what the doctor ordered!

A pretty good bunch of cards have dropped into packs, strangely this week we don’t seem to have junior versions of the icons, but I think we’re all just glad to not be packing Prinz anymore. In the SBC section for today however we have a brand new Golazo Icon in the form of football royalty, Eric Cantona.

So what’s new on this card? Well from his Thunderstruck Item this card unfortunately does not come with the weak foot upgrade I would have hoped for, which is a shame. He has been given an additional Playstyle+ but it is the Chip Shot, which for a majority of the playerbase isn’t a very favourable playstyle. For normal playstyles he has been given the Acrobatic Playstyle, of which again, isn’t a favourable option. So for upgrades, not off to a particularly good start.

For stats in general, this card has had a +4 to pace and a +3 to his Physicals but outside of that, a bunch of 1s and 2s for upgrades. Don’t get me wrong, this card looks really decent but when comparing this to the previous version, it doesn’t feel like a big jump. But let’s see how he plays.

Cantona slots right in the Striker role alongside Zola, to which the two complete each other in one being the short speedier player and the other a tall dominant striker. I could feel an absolute goal fest coming on with these two. I wanted to play him more as a CAM as I felt he would perform better here so he was instructed to get behind Zola and setup those easy goals.

For Chemstyle here it kind of has to be the Engine here. Rounds of the dribbling nicely by putting a much needed boost to the agility and balance whilst also boosting his passing and giving a nudge to those pace stats.

As you would expect, an SBC fit for a King. Of course that means it comes in at a heavy price and as I predicted, a big price difference between this and the thunderstruck item. To complete this SBC it will cost roughly 1.4 million coins. Whereas to purchase the previous card it will only cost 230k. A massive fraction of the price so could be a little hard to justify this cost unless he absolutely wows in-game.

How did he perform in-game?

+ Dribbling, assisted by the technical playstyle +, was the clear standout feature of this card. He manoeuvred with the ball incredibly well and made a real challenge in trying to get the ball off of him.

+ Passing was also as you would expect, incredible. He found his man with ease and setup some great goals by threading the ball through some tight spots

+ Shooting of course was also great as he was very clinical in front of goal.

+ Finally his physicals, his strength served him well as he often forced players away from the ball and did a really good job at holding off the opposition when making a run with the ball

/ Pace for me didn’t feel amazing, with the engine he has 96 pace but I think due to the body type, he just didn’t feel very quick.

Cantona - Cop or Flop?

This item didn’t wow me like he has in previous years. The FUT Birthday version from Fifa 23 was an incredible card and I really hoped this card would be similar to that, but he just wasn’t. This card isn’t terrible but for 1.4 million coins I really expected a lot more. I think if you want a Cantona item in your squad you are probably better off saving the coins and sticking with the thunderstruck version, because the upgrades are almost unnoticeable.
