This is probably one of the weakest TOTWs we will see all year, and while EA could force a couple of high-rated players in with it coming alongside the TOTY promotion, there are limited ways to do that. Headlining, we have Gakpo, Gvardiol, and Mahrez.
Dorde Petrovic - GK - 79 > 84 OVR
Five saves / Strasbourg 2 - Lille 1 / 8 L’equipe Rating
With Chelsea fans growing increasingly frustrated with Sánchez, it seems a bizarre decision to loan out Petrovic, who delivered so many strong performances for them during the tail end of last season. The Serbian made some crucial saves for Strasbourg this weekend as they recorded an impressive 2–1 win over Lille.
Josko Gvardiol - LB - 83 > 86 OVR
One goal / Man City 3 - Chelsea 1 / 8 Sky Rating
Man City are now recording consistent results and have re-entered the top four after a 3–1 win over Chelsea. Gvardiol is often given the freedom to roam in this side, which results in plenty of chances for the Croatian. Gvardiol scored City’s first and was unlucky not to get another. He went on to receive MOTM, which, as a defender in a big game, always boosts your standing in the pecking order.
Jarrad Branthwaite - CB - 79 > 86 OVR
Clean sheet / Brighton 0 - Everton 1 / 9 Sky Rating
Since Branthwaite returned to the Everton side, their defensive displays have become some of the best in the division. This is no coincidence, as the Englishman brings a lot to the team. He was phenomenal at the back this weekend, claiming MOTM for Everton as they kept out Brighton to win 1-0.
Riccardo Calafiori - CB - 78 > 84 OVR
Goal and clean sheet / Wolves 0 - Arsenal 1 / 8 Sky Rating
An early controversial red card for Arsenal put them on the back foot for large parts of the match, but it was made 10v10 after a reckless decision from Gomes. Arsenal then took advantage, with Calafiori scoring the only goal of the game.
Riyad Mahrez - RM - 85 > 86 OVR
One goal, one assist / Al-Ahli 5 - Al-Riyadh 0 / 8.7 Sofascore Rating
Either Mahrez or Toney could realistically make this side, but with Toney being snubbed on a few occasions this year, I am opting for Mahrez. The Algerian also received MOTM here after his goal and assist helped secure a comfortable 5–0 home win.
Guus Til - CM - 75 > 86 OVR
Two goals / PSV 3 - NAC Breda 2 / 8 VI Rating
PSV survived a late scare to sustain their gap at the top of the table with a 3-2 win over Breda. Til scored both their first two goals and went on to claim MOTM with an 8/10. The competition for places is lower than usual this week so this SIF is very likely.
Fermin Lopez - CAM - 79 > 86 OVR
Two goals, two assists / Barcelona 7 - Valencia 1 / 9.9 Sofascore Rating
It’s yet another Spanish youngster breaking through at Barcelona. This was Lopez’s thirteenth appearance for the club this season, and before this match, he had yet to make an offensive contribution. That all changed here, though, as he claimed MOTM with two goals and two assists as Barcelona destroyed Valencia 7–1.
Maghnes Akliouche - RM - 76 > 86 OVR
One goal, one assist / Monaco 3 - Rennes 2 / 8 L’equipe Rating
There were a couple of strong options in Ligue 1 that couldn’t be included due to proximity, meaning we are probably limited to two selections from the league. One of those will inevitably be Akliouche, who claimed the joint-highest rating of the week for his goal and assist in a narrow 3-2 win.
Hugo Ekitike - ST - 76 > 86 OVR
Two goals / Hoffenheim 2 - Frankfurt 2 / 2 Kicker Rating
Life without Marmoush is going to take some adapting, but Ekitike stepped up for their first match post-Egyptian. Scoring twice, he claimed MOTM during a 2–2 away draw with Hoffenheim.
Mateo Retegui - ST - 76 > 86 OVR
Two goals / Como 1 - Atalanta 2 / 8 Gazzetta Rating
Retegui took his total to sixteen for the season with another two goals away at Como on Saturday. The Italian continues to impress, and interest from top European clubs simply has to come soon.
Cody Gakpo - ST - 83 > 86 OVR
Two goals, one assist / Liverpool 4 - Ipswich 1 / 9 Sky Rating
It was all very routine for Liverpool, who dominated Ipswich from the start. There were a couple of options to consider for this IF, but Gakpo has to be the favourite after being involved in three of the four goals and claiming MOTM with a 9/10 performance.
Substitutes
Strahija Pavlovic - CB - 76 > 83 OVR
One assist / AC Milan 3 - Parma 2 / 7.5 Gazzetta Rating
With Parma leading 2–1 heading into injury time, it looked certain that an upset was on the cards. Milan had other ideas, though, scoring in both the 92nd and 95th minutes to turn the match on its head. Pavlovic, who had a goal ruled out earlier in the match, provided the assist for the last-minute winner and claimed MOTM as well.
Mary Fowler - LW - 77 > 83 OVR
One goal, one assist / Aston Villa 2 - Man City 4 / 9.2 Sofascore Rating
While the WSL has no clear candidates, I would once again expect one to be forced in. There are a couple of routes to go with this, but it’s Fowler’s goal and assist that stand out to me.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid - LM - 79 > 84 OVR
Two assists / Tottenham 1 - Leicester 2 / 8 Sky Rating
Leicester came from behind to beat struggling Tottenham 2–1. The result takes Leicester out of the relegation zone and increases the pressure on Ange. Reid provided the assist on both Leicester goals, claiming MOTM with an 8/10 for his efforts.
Patrick Wimmer - CM - 77 > 83 OVR
One goal, one assist / Wolfsburg 2 - Kiel 2 / 1.5 Kicker Rating
2–2 was a popular scoreline in the Bundesliga this week, with four matches ending that way. Wolfsburg v Kiel was one of those four. Wimmer came off the bench to provide both a goal and an assist, a performance that saw him claim MOTM with a 1.5.
Morgan Guilavogui - CAM - 72 > 83 OVR
Two goals, one assist / St Pauli 3 - Union Berlin 0 / 1 Kicker Rating
With a couple of top-division silver strikers performing well this week, I can see them sneaking onto the bench. The first of those two is Guilavogui, after the forward was named POTW in Germany for two goals and one assist.
Dango Ouattara - ST - 74 > 83 OVR
Hat trick / Bournemouth 5 - Forest 0 / 10 Sky Rating
With a couple of striker injuries, Bournemouth were forced to play Ouattara out of position in the striker role. Ouattara took this opportunity perfectly, scoring three times during an impressive 5–0 win over high-flying Forest. The chance of European football next season is seemingly becoming increasingly likely for Bournemouth.
Rey Manaj - ST - 76 > 83 OVR
Two goals, two assists / Sivasspor 5 - Kayserispor 2 / 9.9 Sofascore Rating
The Super Lig continues to consistently receive IFs, and once again we have an easy inclusion from the division after Manaj was involved in four goals during a seven-goal thriller. With two goals and two assists, the Albanian was among the best performers this week.
Reserves
Lucas Brumme - LB - 66 > 83 OVR
Two goals, one assist / RW Essen 5 - Hannover II 1 / 9.8 Sofascore Rating
Marta Cazalla Garcia - CB - 71 > 83 OVR
Two goals, clean sheet / Zeiss Jena 0 - Hoffenheim 3 / 9.2 Sofascore Rating
Alimami Gory - RM - 68 > 83 OVR
Hat trick / Paris 4 - Red Star 1 / 9.5 Sofascore Rating
Grady Diangana - ST - 72 > 83 OVR
Two goals, two assists / WBA 5 - Portsmouth 1 / 9.7 Sofascore Rating
Semir Telalovic - ST - 62 > 83 OVR
Four goals / Ulm 5 - Regensburg 1 / 1 Kicker Rating
