A Marmoush fourteen-minute hat trick, the resurgence of Antony, and an unorthodox ST for Arsenal stand out in TOTW 23 as the return of the Premier League sees five included from the division.
Alex Palmer - GK - 72 > 85 OVR
Five saves / Aston Villa 1 - Ipswich 1 / 8 Sky Rating
Goalkeepers were few and far between this week, and we will likely end up with a random inclusion. I am going to make a case for Palmer, who made five saves during his Premier League debut and was named MOTM with an 8/10 from Sky. He made a simply ridiculous save in the dying embers of the match to ensure 10-man Ipswich came away with a hard-fought point.
James Tarkowski - CB - 80 > 87 OVR
One goal / Everton 2 - Liverpool 2 / 8 Sky Rating
The final-ever Merseyside derby to be hosted at Goodison Park didn’t disappoint, with a last-minute equaliser from a stunning Tarkowski finish sharing the points. The central defender was then named MOTM with an 8/10, which, in such a big game, should be enough for his inclusion, likely as a featured player.
Jonathan Tah - CB - 86 > 87 OVR
MOTM - Leverkusen 0 - Munich 0 / 1 Kicker Rating
While on paper this looks like a boring 0-0 draw, the match was actually dominated by Leverkusen, who just failed to score. They were superb defensively and limited Munich to practically no goalscoring opportunities. Tah was named MOTM in such a high-profile match, which should see him included.
Jorrel Hato - LB - 73 > 87 OVR
Two assists and clean sheet / Ajax 4 - Heracles 0 / 7.5 VI Rating
Although Hato didn’t receive the highest rating of the week in the Eredivisie, his duo of assists from LB was too much for me to ignore in a week with limited defensive options—especially with a clean sheet to his name as well. Already receiving an IF also helps, as it means he would be 87-rated for this week's side.
Kadidatou Diani - RM - 88 > 90 OVR
Hat trick / Lyon 7 - Guingamp 0 / 9.5 Sofascore Rating
There were a couple of popular Lyon players in with a shout for a TOTW 23 position after their 7-0 win over Guingamp. Bacha narrowly misses out after providing two assists, while Diani scored three of those seven from RM.
Antony - RM - 77 > 87 OVR
One goal, one assist / Betis 3 - Sociedad 0 / 9.3 Sofascore Rating
It’s becoming an increasingly worrying trend that players who leave Man United return to form soon after. Antony is yet another player who is finding his feet since departing the Red Devils, with several top performances for Betis already to his name. His latest saw him pick up both a goal and an assist during an impressive 3-0 home win over Sociedad.
Takumi Minamino - CAM - 79 > 87 OVR
One goal, two assists / Monaco 7 - Nantes 1 / 8 L’equipe Rating
Monaco ran riot when hosting Nantes this weekend, scoring on seven occasions. Biereth once again excelled, scoring three of those seven, but with a recent IF to his name, we have to look elsewhere. Minamino is the next best option with a goal and two assists. He also received the same match rating, making him an easy selection.
Omar Marmoush - LM - 79 > 87 OVR
Hat trick / Newcastle 0 - Man City 4 / 9 Sky Rating
Man City looked back to their best with a sublime performance away at Newcastle on Saturday. Marmoush made his mark, scoring three goals within fourteen minutes to claim his first career hat-trick. We all knew how good Marmoush was at Frankfurt, and the early signs are strong in a City shirt as well.
Mikel Merino - ST - 85 > 87 OVR
Two goals / Leicester 0 - Arsenal 2 / 10 Sky Rating
Arsenal have something of a striker crisis at the club currently, with a lack of goals often making matches harder than they need to be. Merino made a case for the position after coming off the bench late on with the scores level, before proceeding to score twice and securing Arsenal a vital three points.
Amine Gouiri - ST - 78 > 87 OVR
Two goals / Marseille 5 - St Etienne 1 / 8 L’equipe Rating
Gouiri has excelled since making the switch to Marseille, with attacking contributions in all three of his matches for them so far. It was his best performance this weekend, though, as he scored twice in Marseille’s convincing 5-1 win.
Karim Benzema - ST - 86 > 88 OVR
One goal, two assists / Al-Ettifaq 0 - Al-Ittihad 4 / 9.4 Sofascore Rating
The Saudi selection was not as easy as it has been in recent weeks, but I still feel the division will receive at least one player. Benzema is my favourite this time around after the Frenchman scored once and assisted another two during a comfortable 4-0 away win.
Substitutes
Ismaily - LB - 78 > 85 OVR
MOTM / Rennes 0 - Lille 2 / 8 L’equipe Rating
While defenders do often need offensive contributions to be noticed, an 8 from L'Équipe is a high rating for them. So, despite it just being a strong performance on paper, that match rating goes a long way for Ismaily, especially with limited defensive options this week.
Dan Ndoye - RM - 75 > 87 OVR
Two goals / Bologna 3 - Torino 2 / 7.5 Gazzetta Rating
Bologna came out on top of a five-goal thriller while hosting Torino. Ndoye was named MOTM after his two goals helped lead Bologna to all three points as they continue to fight for a European position.
Juan Luis Sanchez - CM - 72 > 85 OVR
Two goals, one assist / Valladolid 0 - Sevilla 4 / 8.7 Sofascore Rating
Sanchez’s base card is a RB but was deployed in a more advanced CM role this weekend. He showed exactly why that was the case, being directly involved in three of Sevilla’s four goals as they cruised to a 4-0 away win over Valladolid.
Ryan Christie - CDM - 76 > 85 OVR
One goal, one assist / Southampton 1 - Bournemouth 3 / 9 Sky Rating
Southampton failed to build upon their recent three points as they hosted high-flying Bournemouth, falling to a 3-1 defeat. Christie was superb throughout for the Cherries, with his goal and assist rounding off an overall brilliant display. A 9-match rating from Sky outlined just how good this performance was.
Janice Cayman - CAM - 75 > 85 OVR
Two goals / Leicester 3 - Aston Villa 0 / 8.6 Sofascore Rating
It’s a huge three points for Leicester as they move six points away from the relegation zone with a 3-0 win over fellow strugglers Aston Villa. Cayman, who was playing a more advanced role this week, stood out, scoring two of Leicester’s three goals.
Georgios Masouras - ST - 75 > 85 OVR
Two goals / Bochum 2 - Dortmund 0 / 1 Kicker Rating
Masouras was signed from Olympiakos in January, and what an introduction he has made. Scoring twice this weekend as Bochum shocked Dortmund, winning 2-0, the Greek striker was named player of the week in Germany, receiving a perfect 1 match rating.
Giovanna Hoffmann - ST - 78 > 85 OVR
Two goals, one assist / Leipzig 4 - Potsdam 1 / 9.3 Sofascore Rating
Leipzig could be in line for back-to-back IFs, with another striker excelling for them this weekend. Hoffmann recorded two goals and an assist as she helped Leipzig secure a 4-1 win over Potsdam. We were not treated to numerous hat-tricks this week, so the door is open for several striker options this week.
Reserves
Josema - LB - 64 > 85 OVR
Two goals / Gornik 3 - Radomiak 2 / 8.4 Sofascore Rating
Alan - CM - 72 > 85 OVR
Hat trick / Moreirense 3 - Casa Pia 2 / 9.1 Sofascore Rating
Jurgen Ekkelenkamp - LM - 72 > 85 OVR
Two goals / Udinese 3 - Empoli 0 / 7.5 Gazzetta Rating
Patrick Mortensen - ST - 72 > 85 OVR
Hat trick / Sonderjyske 1 - AGF 4 / 9.3 Sofascore Rating
Ianis Stoica - ST - 67 > 85 OVR
Hat trick / Sepsi 2 - Hermannstadt 3 / 9.2 Sofascore Rating
