DeanThe Immortals promo is upon us, it brings a plethora of incredible Heroes and Icons to Ultimate Team. This promo features a “Baby” version as well as the “Prime” version of each card. I think I speak for everyone when I say, i’ll be keeping my eyes locked in for potential evos on this one!
SBCs have had a treat today in that we have been given a Flashback Szczesny and an Immortals Beckbauer. This Beckenbauer of course being the “Baby” version for this promo but of course we’ll take a look at this one!
This version can play in the CDM & CM position so for the purpose of this review I will of course be playing him in those default positions. However he can also revert back to the CB position which could well be the better option for him. But we will see how he does in-game.
He comes with 3 Playstyle Pluses in Jockey, Long Ball and Intercept. As much as I think he may be better played at CB, those playstyles certainly suit a Defensive Mid more. From the base version he has had a +1 overall with generic boosts across the board with the exception of a +6 to Physicals.
The chemstyle is easily the Shadow. His pace needs a bit of a boost and of course we can’t not end up with 99 defending on this card.

Only 8 segments to complete this SBC, which for an Icon SBC is not bad going whatsoever. The price is coming in at roughly 250k to complete, which yet again is really good. All he has to do is deliver in-game, and this one will be a cracking SBC.
How did he perform in-game?
+ Defensively he was absolutely solid. Intercepts the ball constantly and really presses his man, winning a majority of his tackles.
+ Passing impressed a lot, specifically the long ball pass. He was able to ping the ball from defence and send his attackers through on goal. Through balls were also sent forward with speed that usually left the opposition struggling to react.
+ Positionally he was solid. Always moving out into space to support the build-up play as well as quickly tracking back on attack.
- Dribbling for me just felt off. For a midfielder, you ideally want him to be able to control the ball well. But when trying to dribble out of tough situations he usually fumbled. He very much felt like a defender out of position when dribbling higher upfield.
Beckenbauer - Cop or Flop?
The price on this item is absolutely fantastic. It’s hard to fault this SBC when the upgraded version comes in currently at almost 15x the price of this one.That being said though, I just didn’t feel this card played with the “Wow” factor that you would expect at this stage of the game. My problem with this SBC is that he has the playstyles of a midfielder but the stats would better suit him playing at CB.
For players that might be just starting out or have returned to FC after a long hiatus, then maybe this one is good to go for. But for those that have been grinding for months, you most likely have players that can play either the CB or Midfield role much better than this card can. I’m sure the 96 version is incredible but for me, this card is a miss and one you certainly won’t be missing out on if you avoid it. Save your fodder because I feel there are bigger and better SBCs on the way.
