The promos continue to pile up as the FIFA cycle rolls on.  With so many cards available in the game it is important to have tactics available to get them all moving in the right direction and today we look at the 4-4-2!

On The Attack…

The team press created by the 4-4-2 in defence is bound to create counter attack chances in attack.

The right midfielder and left midfielder join in with the two strikers to create a 4 man attack that is bolstered by the addition of the box to box central midfielder.  The addition of a midfielder in attack is key to creating the free man and taking advantage of numerical superiority. 

In Defence…

The most notable factor when considering the 4-4-2 is the ability to press the ball over the entire pitch, with the focus on winning possession back quickly.

Setting traps and double teaming opponents relies on a quick and coordinated press that is onset by the defensive tactics and speed of defenders.

Suggested Players for the 4-4-2 

At this stage in any FIFA cycle the need for Pace becomes a vital factor in the success of any card.  But for players in the 4-4-2 especially it is the key to unlocking the potential of the defensive onslaught and offensive excellence.

Best Strikers to Use in the 4-4-2

The quick and agile striker reigns supreme in the 4-4-2 and can thrive off the ability to get in behind and cause problems.  The dynamic dribbling, skill move utilizing speedster with the ability to take on opponents offering the best results.  Some perfect examples come in the form of Rulebreakers Ribery, Future Stars Alvarez & TOTY Benzema.

5 STAR WEAK FOOT often comes at a premium price tag but also offers the ability to produce goals from any area in and around the box. 

If a taller, less agile striker is still the way you plan to go it is important to alter the tactics or instructions to be balanced and utilize their size for link up play in attack, more recently CR7 providing a brilliant option.

Best Wingers to Use in the 4-4-2

We mentioned the need for pace already when using this formation and this was never more true than in the wide areas of the pitch.  Quick and agile wingers such as Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are the ideal candidates to utilize transitions and make up the numbers in attack.

Best Central Midfielders to Use in the 4-4-2

With only two central midfielders it is important to have a mixture of players that can carry out the defensive and attacking roles required to keep the team connected.

For the more defensive option it is important to focus on the defensive capabilities of course, but it is important that they can carry the ball as well.  While Vieira reigns as one of most defensively solid cards in the game, it is actually players like Wildcard Kante that will be best suited for this role.

For the more offensive option it is the box to box specialists that will get the job done here.  Make sure to pay attention to the tactics and instructions as it is vital that this player gets forward and joins in offensively to make up the advantage in attack. Ideally players that can take advantage of these opportunities are best with Kevin De Bruyne & Zidane offering perfect examples.

Best Fullbacks to Use in the 4-4-2

Did we mention pace is important with this formation?  The fullbacks are no different and in this case the premium is on solid defenders.  Theo Hernandez & WCH Capdevila just two of the premium options available.
