I was fortunate enough to get this card out of a Base to Mid Icon pack. I use him as a left CDM in a 4-2-3-1 and as a CDM in a 4-1-2-1-2 (2) with an Engine chemistry style. Let me start off with his pace. He is absolutely rapid for a CDM and it really does show - he is incredibly quick to get back when the opponent is on a counter and is always in the right place to either intercept the ball or make a tackle. That brings me to his defending, which is top tier, even without a Shadow or Anchor. The dude feels like Kanté on steroids, thats how good he is! What makes him a better player than Kanté in this game is, in my opinion, his passing, which is very important this year. He can comfortably ping 40 yard over the top through balls. his passing is very very good. His shooting, althought I do not shoot often with him, is still very good - he has a rocket of a long shot on him. His physicality is okay - the strenght isnt insane, but is definitely good enough. I do enjoy his high stamina and aggression a lot though. The only downside to this card is his dribbling. Occasionaly he takes a heavy touch that can result in a counter attack. He doesnt necessarily turn like a truck, but it definitely does feel a bit heavier than it should. I will also mention that I only played with him in Elite Division & in the Weekend League.
- Pace - incredibly fast to get back and just move around looking for interceptions
- Defending - insane interceptions and tackles
- Passing - top class passing, can consistently and accurately ping all sorts of passes
- Shooting - has a very good long shot on him
- Aggression - he will really work for your team, actively looking to tackle or intercept
- Stamina - will last the whole match comfortably
- Linkability - an icon, speaks for itself
- Dribbling - occasional heavy touches, does not turn the best (although by no means awful at turning)
- Aerial abilty - due to his height & average heading ability he will not win many headers
- Value - he is very expensive
Unreal, what can i say hes the best. Used him at CDM and hes absolutely everywhere.
Pace: perfect catches striker and wingers easily
Shooting: longshots and finesse shots are crazy outside the box
Dribbling: sometimes lets him down but hes short and has ood ball control so definitely does the job.
passing: does the job very accurate and composed
Defending: he is just everywhere, literally better at defending than most CBs hes so good, his interceptions are just insane hes unplayable.
phsical: doesnt matter he squeezes strong attackers and nicks the ball off them. Perfect stamina.

I packed this man from my first icon pack ever before a mont. I have played wih him around 100 games as cdm in 4-1-2-1-2 now i changed my team to 4-2-2-2 but i don't think this can affect him. I have to say one thing about him. HE IS THE BEST CDM IN THE GAME not even comparable to Kante and i have tried Kante this man's passing as cdm is one of the best in the game if not the best. His positioning is amazing, has great long shot, he is rapid, he intercepts the ball without even controlling and generally an end game player. If you ask if his sbc is worth it is. He can be in someone's squad as cdm till september.

I've played 183 games with Matthaus. I don't think he is fantastic and that's mainly due to 2 things.
1) Feels slow on the ball
2) Animations are slow
His stats say he is fast and defensively id kinda agree. I don't feel people are simply running past Matthaus and his defensive awareness and interceptions being high is very noticeable but on the ball he feels clunky and slow. Probably down to his 70 Dribbling and 74 Agility.
I also find his shooting to be really dodgy and he struggles to get clean shots off. I'm yet to score a long range shot with him which admittedly arn't my forte but even in acres of space on the edge of the box they never go in; I've been trying a lot.
Both of these gripes are really a problem with me trying to fit a CDM into a CM role but his high/high Workrates are really noticeable so he does need to dribble on occasion and to shoot. Inside the box and the easier chances he can score consistently
