So, as you can tell by my FB name, Matthaus has been a club legend dating back to the beginning of Fifa 21 when I completed the first base icon SBC. He stayed in my starting XI until the very end of the year, and remained one of the first off the bench. I loved the card, and found him to fit my play style perfectly.
It was a sad day in October when I fired up Fifa 22. Luckily, I packed Llorente early on, who served the Matthaus sized hole in my heart rather well, but he just wasn't the same.
I had really good end of season rewards, and was nervous to complete the first icon sbc this year because I felt like my luck was surely gone. But when I packed VVD from my Squad Battle rewards I took it as a sign to send it. I put WAY too much into that SBC lol. I did not have as much fodder as I thought I did.
All fears washed away though, when the German flag and CB flashed on the screen. 2 years in a row. My King had returned.
OVERALL:
Matthaus was overpowered the last couple of years, but with the changes brought to FIFA 22, he is perfect. With an ANCHOR chem style, Lothar boasts 89 acceleration, 91 Vision, 89 in both Short and Long passing, 99 Interceptions, 94 defensive awareness, 99 in both standing and sliding tackle, 84 strength, and 97 aggression. He also boasts some finishing abilities that are perfect for a CDM with 89 shot power, 90 long shots, 95 reactions, and 93 composure. He also has the power free-kick trait, and boy oh boy, he has scored some absolute bangers for me off of set pieces.
To put it simply, Matthaus has the special sauce that other players at the CDM position lack. He is a complete package.
Main Statistic - Defense
There are no defensive drawbacks to this card. He is not super strong, and it's why I boost his physical stats with ANCHOR. With this, he is quite honestly the perfect "balanced attack" CDM.
Main Attribute - 4 Star Weak Foot
Whether you're taking a few dribbles after a tackle, quick passing on the edge of the box, or banging in a shot from 24 yards out. The very usable 4 star weak foot is a big part of what makes this card feel so smooth and special.

Being everywhere on the pitch at once
Dribbling: Maybe the only drawback of the card. You can improve this massively with an ENGINE chem style, but I feel that ANCHOR is best to maximize the type of player Matthaus is. The dribbling is not all that bad, but is a glaring weakness of the card that otherwise has no weaknesses.
Stamina: 86 is fine, but with High/High WRs, he's definitely growing tired by the 80th minute or so.
Strength: 74 is boosted to an 84 with ANCHOR, but the base stat is not stellar and is noticeable without a boost.
Position: A CB who should not be played as a CB can cause some chem issues, but is generally a harmless thing. I start him as the middle CB in a 5-2-2-1 setup, and move him to the right cdm spot on balanced attack in a 4-2-2-2 immediately.
