TOTS Emre Can

And so the TOTS madness begins; the Most Consistent TOTS release was all about the Lion himself, but Zlatan is an obvious choice and a review doesn’t seem necessary.  Instead it was another card that caught my eye in the middle of the mix; maybe it was the terrible dynamic image (is it just me or does his head look squished?); or maybe more importantly the single shooting base statistic away from being a part of the Gullit Gang.  Emre Can entered into the Weekend League spot light and it was a tale of two reviews.  I started with the HUNTER chemistry style applied and played Emre in a 4-2-3-1 CAM position, but after about the 15th missed scoring opportunity I would change it up.  I spent the final 10 matches using the ENGINE chemistry style in the CDM positon of my more traditional 4-2-2-2 with amazing success.

Final Score

Final Rating: 9/10

I was tempted to drop this rating into the 8.8 range but after careful consideration a 9 seems appropriate.  This card is the epitome of a box to box midfielder.  In fact, he is a 6 yard to 6-yard box to box midfielder.  One second Can will be winning headers in your defensive third, next he is driving through the midfield linking up the play, and next second you know he is in the opponents box trying to finish off the play (which he seldom does, unfortunately).  It has become clear to me that my initial lower rating is due to the finishing ability of this card, when in reality he is a card I would not buy for the goals he scores, but instead the goals he creates.  84 ACCELERATION & 89 SPRINT SPEED are not blowing anyone away on the surface, but honestly, this is card flies.  I can’t get over how effective this card is at linking play in the midfield, and 90% comes from his quickness on the ball.  Add in some decent passing statistics and you get a return of 13 assists in 20 games form the center of the park.

Link-ability

Rating: 3.5/5

While Emre offers a lot of valuable connections to the Serie A and German players, I find that combination to be tricky.  I realize that players from different nations than the league they play in offer different connections, but in the end, it can be difficult to squeeze them in a squad.

End Game Strength & Value/Coins

EGS Rating: 3.5/5
V/C Rating: 5/5

It is difficult to place a value on the longevity of a card as intricate as TOTS Emre Can.  I found his work rates and pace through the midfield to be invaluable.  The first clip in the video is strategically placed just to demonstrate the power of his running and then the perfectly weighted pass into the path of Ibra.  The chemistry style defines the man in this case and Emre truly is an engine in the middle of the park and was constantly pulling my squad forward, which I enjoyed immensely.  Yet, this card has some serious downfalls and I will discuss them more at length in the Good/Bad section.  In my mind, these negatives will leave Can lost to the sands of time as new and more improved options arrive.

When you take a second and look at the cost of this card, 245k feels like the perfect price point.  Emre is definitely in the “good tier” of players but is far from excellent.  He adds quality, pace, power, and an overall presence and therefore is worth every coin.  He cannot single handily win you games, has some glaring shortfalls, and cannot score to save his life and therefore is not a 400k+ card either.  Goldilocks would say that this price is “just right,” and I would tend to agree.

Uniqueness

Rating: 3/5

The TOTS cards will flood the market in the coming month and so will the dynamic images.  I would suggest that 90% of those images will be better than Can’s.  His face looks squished or elongated and it drives me nuts, his fist also looks twice the size of his head.  The Blue/Yellow Lightning-like design is kind of growing on me but does not look good with this card at all.  Emre’s stats are impressive but do not set him apart from similar options and he just feels and looks like a “regular” card.

Good vs. Bad & Closing Words

G/B Rating: 3.5/5

Going North and South up and down the pitch Emre Can feels like a stallion galloping past defenders;  turning in either direction he feels like a donkey and has zero rotation capabilities.  With 87 AGILITY & 90 BALANCE you would expect Emre to dance on the ball, but in reality, he is clumsy and painful to turn with.  I have also brought up the lack of shooting capabilities with this card and due to his driving to goal, he missed at least 20 golden opportunities during this review.  The good is included in this downfall in that Can is constantly in the right position and his running is what gets him there.  95 STAMINA also means that this running is a constant throughout the match and you notice the presence of this card in all phases of play.  In the end, you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to Emre Can and you need to decide what qualities you want in a CDM.  For me Emre Can brought an incredible assist total, he was a beast in the midfield, but just fell short in too many categories to hold on to.  Cheers for reading.
