The Best Striker I've Used (So far...)
By Chinitoisrael, 29-11-2017

What can I say, Mertens has been working complete magic for my team. I am one for fast and super agile strikers, if that's what you're looking for then look no further than Dries Mertens. Mertens is everything I've ever wanted in a striker, but does even more than I expected.

Pace: 9/10

Mertens is extremely quick off the ball, and can outrun most defenders. I was expecting him to be a tad faster if I had to be honest, hence giving him a 9. But overall, he has enough speed to effectively get the job done.

Shooting: 9.5/10

I can't truly remember the last time that I missed a shot with this little monster, he has a very accurate shot with both of his feet. From a range, Mertens is decent and scored me a few long distance bangers, but I felt that he could've scored a few more. However, the one minor con I had with his shot was it's lack of power, but if used correctly such as using driven shots or aiming for the corner, Mertens will never miss a shot for you.

Passing: 9/10

Suprisingly, Mertens has been able to make passes to his partner in crime Jesus with extreme ease. His passing is something I was shocked with, knowing that it's not extremely high. Mertens had more assists than the amount of games he had played for my team. I would give him a 10 in this category, but I did not feel that his passing was necessarily perfect, but still suprisingly good.

Dribbling: 10/10

Now this is what makes Mertens the best striker I have used in this game. Just his agility is insane enough on this card; but together with his dribbling and ball control stats, they make Mertens a force to be reckoned with. Mertens is extremely weak, so you'd think the tiniest nudge would knock him down, but his balance makes up for it. Often when Mertens would get pushed by a defender, he'd slightly lose his balance but would quickly regain it and keep the ball magnetized to his feet.

Physical: 6.5/10

This is the major flaw of Mertens. It's pretty obvious that Mertens is extremely weak, he will constantly be bullied off the ball if he encounters very strong defenders; however, as I previously stated, his balance completely makes up for this flaw. Besides his strength, his stamina and aggression were satisfactory for me and they didn't really pose an issue for me.

Overall: 9.5/10

Merten's goal to game ratio was not very high for me, but the impact he made on my team was enough for me to rate him this highly. Mertens isn't only good for scoring goals, but can also create great openings and passes to his teamates. I tried him a 4321 and a 41212 (2) and I found that 2 striker formations are much better for him, he not only played better for me but was able to pass much more effectively this way. But you definitely should experiment different methods of playing him on your team, but trust me, if you don't mind his lack of strength you've got a hell of a player on your hands.

  • Very Fast
  • Extremely Agile
  • Effective Finishing
  • Great Ball Control and Dribbling
  • Insane Balance
  • Strength (But makes up for it with his balance)
  • Shot Power

FRICKING BEAST
By topbibss7, 10-12-2017

Mertens... I had 150k so i decided to build a cheap squad around him. Everyone else said that hes not worth it and that hes a waste of coins... WRONG... In his first match this guy goes and scores 4 goals against the hardest team on squad battles... ON LEGENDARY... he gets past the defence so easily. all you need is someone who can pass the ball... His finishing is sublime and not a single defender can stop him. It feels like that as soon as he shoots, its bound to go in...

Are you good enough for him ?
By Futips, 17-01-2018

Mertens is very unlike other OP forwards in FIFA18 : he ain't strong. If you get in contact with some Rudiger, Bailly or even average defenders, he will stumble and eventually lose possession. YET, his top balance and agility makes it very easy to counter your opponent's anticipation and to espace physical battle. In this way, he is very close to Messi since he really drives your opponent nuts. And the best part of it, he has a clinical, ninja right foot. Too quick to counter, too precise to save. The man just scores every game, look at his stats in my team ! But can you handle such an OP card ? Try it and you'll know.

Hmm lets talk a bit about Dries Mertens shall we?

First of all I got the guy for a snipe, 93500 coins. CHEAP AF, #snipingking #webappking

But is he worth the cooooins, compared to his price?

My first impression was his pace, he really does make the center of gravity. He tears the defence apart, no matter who he is against. Ramos, Kompany BOOSTED SCREAM CARD, bonucci u name it.

If you put player instructions on martens I suggest "stay central and run behind defence" then you are pretty much good to go. His way of running in game looks so cool, and you feel comfortable playing with him because of his inane balance. Trust me he stays on his feet even though a tough player like Maldini tackles him brutally...

He is decent

Incredible player

The way he skips past the defenders is bloody amazing. Without doubt his dribbling and pace are the highlights; you can basically do anything and he will stay on the ball. After you've obliterated the whole opponents team and you get in front of goal he is nothing short of deadly. Low driven shots, longshots, curve finesse shots. One and only thing are his freekicks, despite having OK stats I cannot get myself to score with him (Willian and Hamsik usually deliver). And, ofcourse, the strength. If you find yourself surrounded by enemies, hope for the best because he will not stay on his feet (It is not actually a huge problem, you mostly get a freekick anyway). So if you're a player that likes quick styles of play he is the best you can get.
