Maestro in the middle

I mostly don't spend much money when it comes to midfielders (apart from my cam) or my defenders for that matter. I rather invest more money in my attackers because it are the goals that win you the game.

That doesn't mean you don't need any good midfielders, if you lose the battle in midfield you wll have a hard time scoring, not to mention a hard time defending. Still, you can find pretty good midfielders for a cheap price and it are pretty much those midfielders that I always buy. But since modric dropped a lot in price lately and I had some money to spare I decided to try him out, like I do every year.

The first thing you'll notice is that a 89 rated midfielder has the weight of a rhino on your midfield compared to those 80-85 midfielders. Suddenly you find yourself getting a lot more balls up front, passes come easier and you win the battle on midfield a lot easier. It's only normal when you look at modric stats. His passes are so good, he would make a lot of cam's jeaulous, don't mistake him for a cam though, he doesn't have a lot of attack positioning and he's still got 66 marking, 76 interceptions and 80 standing tackle. So he will recover a lot of balls for you, even with his high/medium workrates.

Once he gets the balls, he can easily keep it, modric has the ball control of a god and with those high reactions his first touch is as smooth as butter. Modric has only 58 strength, but you don't notice it like you do with for instance thiago. That's because he has higher balance, making him able to retain the ball better while dribbling. He also got a better first touch, making him able to start dribbling faster, or pass faster when he gets the ball. Modric has 93 agility as well, so he can turn quite fast to keep the ball away from the defender. Modric is simply a master at keeping possession in midfield.

Modric has also quite a decent shot for a midfielder but he doesn't have a lot shot power, so it's advisable to use curve (finesse) to make your shot more effective. His curve isn't that high (79) but it still adds enough to your shot. Don't forget he has 4 star weak foot too.

To conclude I can only say that modric is a steal for the price he's going for. He has amazing dribbling and passing, this while he's quite decent at shooting and defending. The only downside is his heading, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just don't put him a position where you expect him to win any headers (like a defensive midfield position).
