Van der Beast

So being a very big fan of our long tall Dutchman, I decided to go ahead and buy Van der Sar to see how he would fare and help me get those clean sheets. I must admit that I felt skeptical lashing out this amount of cash for a keeper, and thus I wanted to really put him to the test, which meant using him with a very simple and not that good Dutch team. The defence was chosen in such a way that they would not be likely outpaced and would force the opponent to shoot from distance as well as combining through the center to score against our man Edwin.

I could have come up with this review after the first 7 clean sheets that I managed to grab, but wanted to see more of him as playing with Van der Sar at the back feels safe. He is someone you can rely on to keep those balls out and he will only occasionally be beaten. Long shots and balls send into the box from the wing are where he shines the most, as he is fast enough to get into the position and will just punch any ball that he can get his hands on out of play. Yes, no weird rebound goals when your keeper pushes the ball away and directly in the feet of the next opponent, with van der Sar you know those balls will be gone long enough for him to casually stroll back to his position.

Now is it all good? There are some things that this van der Sar card does not excell at. His speed is ok, but he is not the fastest keeper around and thus will sometimes get beaten if you try and use him as a keeper sweeper. Balls from up close and personal will most of the time be stopped but not caught, as he often punches those out of play over the backline in stead of stopping them. This however is not a problem as I have yet to be scored against from a corner with van der Sar in goal. Furthermore he is really good in throwing the ball fast after grabbing it after such a corner and start a counter attack, which is what the meta game seems to be all about once more. The goal he scored was from a corner by the way as I saw myself a goal down in the last minute and in came van der Sar to save the day. Due to his length and goalkeepers not being picked up by a defender, he is a threat for a late minute equalizer.

Overall a very good card. If you have the money don't hesitate no more and go and buy him, as he fits in any team.
