So, i noticed that there weren't any reviews on this card and here i am, the first reviewer and a happy one i must say. So i was lucky enough to pack this guy untradable and after getting over the initial ecstasy i decided to pair him alongside Umtiti, Varane and 2nd IF Lala at the back with a midfield link to Fabinho. I put him on mixed attack and made Fabinho stay back to cover when he's out of position (although he rarely is). And i can happily say that after 106 games with him, HE IS INSANE. There is literally nothing he cant do. He's fast enough to bomb up in attack and still make it back to defend and his 99 stamina makes that easy. He's great at corners, IMMENSE at long shots, and really good at other things like tackling, passing etc. He's also very good at long balls, because i just do lob through balls to IF Rashford and they're all perfect. Only fault, and it is minor, is that he's small. 1 mil is expensive, but worth it.
Shooting
Crossing
Passing
Tackling
Long Balls
Has a nice afro
Stamina
Surprisingly, strength
Covers areas quickly and well
Can sometimes lose headers to tall attackers e.g. Arnautavic (although he has won headers over Pogba before!)
He's the only TOTY I've ever packed, and I was originally a bit unsure of what to do as I'm using a BPL squad and he was untradeable. I also didn't want to waste such a good card at fullback so I did some rather convoluted positioning changes to get him as the RDM in my Premier league 4-2-2-2. Originally I used (CAM positioned)Fabinho at CB, moved (CDM)Rashford up to CAM, and put Marcelo at RDM, but I've since added Flashback David Luiz and changed it up a bit (you can follow the link to my current squad). He is far and away the best box to box CM I have ever played with. His passing and dribbling are great, but it's his physicality and reactions that allow him to totally dominate the midfield. Almost all of my play goes through him, and with Marksman he's enough of a longshot threat that he can't be defended against conservatively. Add in 5 star skills and he forces the opposing defense to be perfect.
I have him set to join the attack, which (with his 99 positioning) also makes him a threat to occasionally cut into the box, and an aerial threat on crosses when the CBs are busy marking strikers. Any time I'm on the wing, I either have Arnautovic, Lukaku or Marcelo mismatched against someone in the box. Since he's at CDM for me he pretty much always gets back into position, but I imagine at CM his low defensive workrate may be a bit of a problem. Although I'm sure he'd be fine as long as he's matched with a high WR partner, especially considering his pace and stamina allow him to catch up to most CMs pretty quickly. He's the centerpiece of my team, and is everywhere on the pitch. Well worth the 1 million if you're looking to control the midfield.
Very hard to muscle off the ball/ great shielding
Excellent dribbling and 5 star skills
Effective playmaker anywhere on the pitch (good vision, passing and crossing)
Dominates the Midfield
Longshooting and in the box threat
Excellent offensive support
Wins the ball back in the Midfield
Short for a LB for his price (excellent in the midfield though)
Low defensive WR
Ultimately, not really the anchor of a defense
His position requires some creative squad building to maximize value
Unlike more of the fortunate guys who packed him, i had to shell out a million coins for this one. I had been using Alex Sandro SIF / Headliner and to be honest, this card aroused my curiosity. Was the H/L going to be a problem? In my highly packed Serie A squad, would Sandro's 10 chemistry be better than maximum of 8 chemistry i could achieve with Marcelo in my squad? Read on!
For some reason, this guy is super fast, faster than Sandro even though the stats show otherwise. I use shadow chemistry on both of them. In CB, I have Chielini IF covering them. In my compact 4-4-1-1, i set my fullbacks to "Stay back while attacking". Marcelo has very good dribbling skills so he sometimes wiggle his way out bringing the ball out of defence.
I think as many reviews have said, if you want an attacking minded LB, Marcelo is your top dog. Telles is very decent but let down but his WF (in my opinion) but cheapest of the 3. But if we consider other LBs then people like Jordi Alba or Tagliafico get a decent shout as well
Marcelo's low defensive workrate is a small issue, especially if your opponent is quick at counter attack. if your CBs slip out down that left, it could be costly, Sandro stays at his position and is hardworking.
Marcelo TOTY is double the price of Headliner Sandro (at time of this writing). It's a tough call, Marcelo compensates other traits like passing, stamina at 99, his flair going up. Double edge sword.
My advice is, if you are a very conservative player and defensive minded - Sandro
If you love that adrenaline rush and have some coins to spare, Marcelo gives you that excitement. He sometimes gets out of position, but when he joins your attack, he adds an extra dimension. I also see a lot of pro players play him and other positions where his stats are more appreciated, LM, CM, etc
Good? If you have the coins to spare. if you're putting him at LB, 1 million is a lot. but it's the most highly rated one
great stamina (99)
fast and adds genuine attacking flair
can be a useful card other than LB position
L defensive workrate sometimes gets in the way if you are defensive minded
a bit expensive to have an LB worth a million coins
