Player Review

87 - IF
4.0
86 Kimmich
By mdlibrandi, 01-02-2019

I play him in a 5 at the back at RWB, because he is obviously more of an attacking fullback than a defending one, although his defensive stats are still quite good. With a High/Low work rate he is going to get forward one way or another, so I just play him at wingback and give him instructions to always overlap. Because of this, he is at times my furthest forward player when attacking, which I like as he is then able to cause trouble from the high wing. Also, because there is an extra defender in the back, he cannot be taken advantage of because of his questionable pace (even with a shadow).

Pace: You can definitely tell there is a huge difference between his acceleration and sprint speed. He is often to take a couple quick touches to get away from defenders, only to be chased down after another couple of touches. Don't expect to outpace most fullbacks.

Shooting: Because he gets so high up the field because of his 82 positioning and high attacking work rate, he actually gets into decent spots with no defenders between him and the goalkeeper, albeit often at tight angles. He can at times power shots past the goalkeeper to the far post. Even if he isn't scoring these shots, the keeper often parries the ball out for a corner, or into the middle where I have 2 strikers waiting to tap in the rebound (sadly these don't count as assists, otherwise his record would be even better for me). Sometimes because he is so far up field, he gets in behind the defense and is one on one with the keeper and has a nice little chip shot on him if the keeper comes out at all.

Passing: This is obviously the reason to get the card. 24 assists in 111 games is alright I think (although with TOTS Kimmich last year he was crazy averaging an assist every game). His assist total would be even higher if it counted the parried shots he takes. It could also be even higher if I shot directly from his pinpoint crosses, however I often cross it up to a big striker (87 Benzema) to nod down to Griezmann to put away. I have not found a better crosser in the game. The 86 short passing and 80 long passing means his other passes are great too, often threading nice through balls behind the defense. Actually plays very nice passes and crosses with his weak foot too.

Dribbling: Good on the ball. Controls basically anything that comes his way. The dribbling is somewhat of a letdown though because even though he is more than capable of beating his defenders, you then have to act quickly or he will be caught up with because he lacks quality sprint speed. If you beat the man, take a couple of touches and swing a cross in.

Defending: I don't ask him to do a lot of defending, because he is essentially playing right wing and has a low defensive work rate, but when he does eventually make it back to his box he is one of the better defending RBs in the game, particularly intercepting the ball.

Physical: This was a pleasant surprise somewhat. Having played a lot with his normal card this year and various cards last year, I knew not to expect a lot from his stamina. Although 87 looks good at first, because he is so attacking it drains very quickly (although I suppose different instructions could change that). 81 jumping is surprisingly good, making him able to win his fare share of headers, and almost all headers against wingers from goal kicks. He also feels much stronger than 66 strength, as he often easily out muscles players off the ball when going for a standing tackle, although this may just be because he is often going up against wingers.

I would say he is comfortably the best RWB in the game, but if you were to play him at RB you may not like him as much. I prefer him for his attacking prowess, and his defensive contributions are simply bonuses. 78,000 (at the time of writing) is a lot for a defender; often more than I am willing to pay. However, when he plays wingback, he is essentially playing as a winger who comes back on defense. If this seems concerning, I would recommend playing a relatively quick CB next to him (Boateng works great, Sule and Hummels not so much) who can cover for him kind of like a RB and then play a less attacking LWB and/or instruct them to not get forward as often. I have both my wingbacks always overlap and have no problem with the 3 CBs cover for them (along with a midfielder).

Attacking contribution (shots/positioning)

Can play basically any type of pass to any spot on the field

Solid defender

Surprisingly strong

Bayern links

Disappointing sprint speed

Stamina drains fast

Not an ideal RB because he gets so high up the field, he may not be in the best defensive position (play him at RWB)

Fantastic Right Back

I got Kimmich in my reds for this past weekend rewards and was not sold on it. I already have the likes of RTTF Alonso and Roberto Carlos as my wingbacks who do perfectly fine off chem and didn't know if Kimmich would make a spot in my team but once I gave him a chance he has proved he is good enough. Let me start off by saying in this review shooting will not be covered as I don't think i took a single shot with Kimmich be...
