is it just me who has a "pattern" in every WL? for me i always lose the first few games, my team feel weighed down by sand bags. then i win a few. it gets to 5-5 (give or take) and then every single match is either won or lost by 1 goal, usually right at the end of the match. in the end, i get to between 9 and 11 wins. same pattern every week, no matter what i change with my team and tactics

the game switches between periods of momentum for one side or the other. Factors i think influence the momentum are well timed skill moves that force the opponent into an animation where they stumble or basically get sent for a hot dog, as well as high passing accuracy and making a lot of tackles. if the momentum feels against you, switch to a devefensive low depth low pressure game plan and do not try to "play through it" by continuing your attacks aggressively. Keep the ball and build up slowly. Make sure you give everyone extra time to take a touch, and dont do anything risky.

I notice the momentum change in game when it benefits me too, when everything feels stupidly easy and im 3-0 up inside 30 mins because the AI is doing everything for me. then suddenly it all switches up and everything feels so much harder. it is so annoying when the game feels so inconsistent, and the AI momentum keeps "shifting". my friends call them "scripted periods" and say "oh dont worry the scripting will flip after half time" .... why do so many people seem to figure this out from their own experience if it isnt true?

everyone relies on AI. It controls 9 out of your 10 outfield players, all the time. its much easier to play when you dont feel like the AI is fighting against you, making your CBs open space so you have to switch to them, then your LB breaks the defensive line so you have to switch to him, then the CB does something to sabotage yourshape again, etc etc. and during all that time, you cant control the player you want because its like youre putting out one fire after another

i should also clarify: youre supposed to progress forwards with the ball, but if you get to the penalty box and have no good opportunities, do not force it! you can go backwards and recycle, switch to the opposite wing and start again. youll keep building up your scripting (aka "momentum"). the commentators also give hints to you that "theyve got the momentum now!" and stuff like that, to help you understand which side currently has more scripting in their favour. but it does change throughout the game, just dont give up.

truth is, the "result" isnt scripted. but the gameplay is heavily manipulated. EA change the sliders (these menus are visible offline, but hidden online" to affect your inputs and to affect your AI player positioning, and this is all dynamic throughout the match. you can swing the scripting in your favour by keeping possession, doing skill moves and advancing forwards with the ball rather than just playing safe useless passes. after a little while, you start to notice the scripting change in your favour. give it a try

out of interest, do you notice the same patterns as me? other examples include, 1) every tackle bounces back or goes out for a throw, literally all the time. 2) your AI CBs jog in a wide circle for no reason before running back, to open up oceans of space for a simple through ball for the opponent. 3) borderline ridiculous animations in 45' and 90'. 4) your team feels "underwater" like in a paddling pool.... and so many more examples i cant fit here. and then eventually, a new game starts and it all stops, everything is fluid again.

another example that just came to me, really really common occurrence for me: you press X to pass, you see the bar power up like normal, but the player (under no pressure) takes an extra step or two and by then the striker is offside. this one happens regularly to me in the games where my team feels underwater, like theyre all drunk. and often, my AI player will get in my way, and just run into me or cut off my options by getting in the way. like my AI is literally fighting against me
