The “Out of Packs,” or “TOTW Golds” Trading Method is a method that’s been used by traders in FIFA Ultimate Team for well over a decade, ever since the inclusion of the Team of the Week, and relies on simple the economic theory of supply and demand.

Trading OR Investing? - Trading / Short Term Investing

Difficulty - LOW

Popularity with Traders - HIGH

Coins Required? - 50,000+

Time - MEDIUM - You will have to keep cards that you buy for a few days before selling

Risk - LOW > MEDIUM

How Does Out of Packs Trading (TOTW Golds) Work?

Simply, when a base Gold, Silver or Bronze card is in packs, there is a constant supply on the market, as people continue to pack a player and list them in the market. Assuming that demand for the player in question remains the same as the supply of the player from packs, prices should remain relatively consistent.

When a player is selected to be in the Team of the Week (TOTW), their base Non-IF card is removed from packs, meaning no more supply, and replaced by the special In-Form item for a 1-week limited time period.

What this means, assuming the demand for the base Non-IF item doesn’t decrease, is that the Non-IF item will rise in price as FUT users continue to buy up the limited number of cards remaining on the market.

How To Make Coins Trading Out of Packs Cards?

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make coins trading Out of Packs cards, or TOTW Golds in this case.

This will take you through the entire process of trading with Out Of Packs cards, from identifying which types of players to buy, what makes a guaranteed TOTW, when to buy, and when to sell.

Notepads at the ready!

Step 1 - Identifying Which Types Of Players To Buy

Not every card that goes out of packs will be a player that you consider buying, as not every player is demanded by the FUT player base.

Take that 75 Non-Rare Gold ST from the Polish Ekstraklasa with 48 Pace, is he going to be getting into many teams? No. Is he going to be getting into many SBC Solutions? Maybe, but probably not.

The best targets are players that are constantly being demanded by FUT Players, such as:

  • META Cards: Especially early on, popular meta Gold cards such as Eder Militao & Fikayo Tomori will be featuring in many FUT Players’ teams. If players like these were to receive a TOTW item, you could expect a big rise in price as people continued to purchase for their squads.

  • SBC Fodder: These are cards that are perhaps higher rated, but not as meta as other options, making them cheaper, but very useful to huge in high-rated squads for SBCs, hence to term SBC Fodder. When these types of players are included in TOTW, if they’re one of the Cheapest By Rating, you’ll likely see increases in the price of the Non-IF as people continue to use them in SBCs if there are desirable challenges or players to complete at the same time.

  • SBC Gems: SBC Gems are players that are consistently used in tricky to complete Squad Building Challenges, such as Advanced SBCs that require multiple leagues & nations. In previous years, things like Argentinian full-backs or Brazilians in various positions have been vital for SBCs, meaning if they ever go out of packs, large rises are common.

Step 2 - Knowing What Makes a TOTW Candidate

So now that we know which types of players we’re looking to buy, we now need to know what is going to earn them a TOTW card, as we can’t simply just go and buy every possible meta gold, SBC fodder or SBC Gem player that scores a goal across a weekend!

Here are some key criteria to look out for across a weekend of football to start identifying which players will be in the running to receive a TOTW.

The more of these a player can tick off, the more likely they are to receive inclusions in the upcoming TOTW, and the greater potential for a solid Out of Packs Investment:

Step 3 - When To Buy

We now know who to buy, and what these players need to achieve in order to receive a TOTW card, now the fun starts, when we go out and buy these cards.

As this is a very competitive trading method, with many eyes on hotly demanded cards that could be soon leaving packs, speed is key to beating the competition, i.e. other traders.

Once you’re certain that a card will likely receive a TOTW card, you can head out and start buying, however, be quick, as many other traders might be thinking the same, quickly driving the price up in a short but impactful wave of buying.

It’s very important to not buy into the hype. If you’re a little late to buy a player for whatever reason, don’t buy at inflated prices. Keep monitoring the price of your desired targets after the game is finished, as there are always fluctuations in the market, and you may be able to pick up some slightly cheaper deals once the hype around the performance dies down.

Step 4 - Hold

So, you’ve now bought your players, now comes the important part, HOLD!

While it may be tempting to cash out at the first sign of profit, it’s imperative that you stick it out, and wait for the optimal time to sell.

Step 5 - When To Sell

On that note, when is the optimal time to sell?

When it comes to out of packs cards, the big rise will (if there is sufficient demand), begin to show once the card has been out of packs for a little while, most commonly at least 2-3 days.

With regards to meta cards, expect increases during popular times for gameplay, such as Friday-Sunday for FUT Champions, whereas cards demanded in SBCs may increase more on days where there is a lot more SBC-related content, such as Thursdays for Marquee Matchups, or on Monday/Tuesday if there is a heavily demanded pack/player SBC released.

However, if you want to play it safe, the best time to sell can actually be before the card goes out of packs, selling to other traders that have perhaps left it a little late to join the party. In doing this, you’ll guarantee yourself profit (if you bought early enough), and won’t carry any further risk of the card not being as demanded as expected once out of packs, therefore not increasing as expected, meaning minimal profits.

Examples of Profits - Out of Packs TOTW Golds Trading

So, does this method really work in practice? Absolutely!

Here are 2 examples of Out of Packs Trading in action from FIFA 22 Ultimate Team.

Example 1 - Phil Foden - TOTW 3 - Early Meta Player

For our first example, we’re going to look at 84 Foden, a very popular early game card due to his huge upgrade from the previous year, making him a usable early meta player in FUT.

Foden received an IF in TOTW 3 that was available from Oct 06 to Oct 13, following a superb goal in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on Oct 03. During this time that the IF was available, the 84 Gold was removed from packs, causing changes in price.

As you can see, from his TOTW-worthy performance on October 3rd to October 12th, when Foden had been out of packs for 6 days, he rose from ~17,000 coins, all the way to ~24,000 coins, a 7,000 coin rise before tax of 5%.

This was because Phil Foden in the early stages was classified as a desirable, meta player that many people were interested in using in their teams, hence the demand remained consistent once he left packs, causing the price to rise as described.

If you had bought 1 Phil Foden, for 17,000 coins and sold for 24,000 coins, you would’ve made 5,800 coins profit.

If you had traded 10 Phil Foden’s for these prices, you’d have made 58,000 coins profit, 20 goes to 116,000 coins profit etc.

This is just one of many examples of Out of Packs trading in action from last year alone!

Example 2 - Emiliano Martinez - TOTW 09 - SBC Fodder

For our next example, let’s take a look at 84 Emiliano Martinez, a card that certainly wouldn’t be classified as “meta,” but is certainly useful in SBCs thanks to his 84 rating and good links.

Martinez received an IF in TOTW 9 last year, that was available from Nov 17 to Nov 24, following a clean sheet in a 1-0 win on international duty against Uruguay. During this time that the IF was available, the 84 Gold was removed from packs, causing changes in price.

From Martinez going out of packs on Nov 17th to Nov 24th, he rose by over 60% from 2700 coins to 4400 coins.

While a 1,480 coin profit in itself doesn’t break the bank, it’s the return on investment here to make note of. A post-tax return of over 50% is incredible, meaning if you put 100,000 coins into Martinez and sold on the dates above, you would’ve returned over 50,000 coins in profit.

This shows the profit potential in buying many cheaper players that are considered “SBC Fodder.”

Pros & Cons

There are several Pros & Cons of out of packs (TOTW Golds) Trading.

Pros

Cons

A very simple method to make coins

Very Competitive due to popularity and ease

Requires minimal market knowledge & monitoring

Have to hold cards for a few days > can clog up your transfer list if you buy in bulk

Doesn’t require a huge amount of coins to get started

Low Time Requirements for buying cards

Ties in well to real-world football, so a great opportunity to make coins if you’re watching games live

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Here are a couple of common mistakes that you’ll want to avoid when making coins with Out of Packs Trading.

  1. Avoid buying late and buying into the hype, as players will already be inflated. It can be very tempting to buy a player that you know will receive a TOTW and go out of packs, even if he’s already risen, but be disciplined, trading is just as much about not losing coins as it is making them.

  2. Avoid buying leaked upcoming TOTW/Promo card inclusions. If you see an upcoming card trending on social media that has been confirmed and will be going out of packs, don’t rush out to buy the base card, as it will already be hugely inflated. Avoid.
