Player Review
84 - SBC
I had almost all the players for the SBCs so it wasn't difficult or expensive to complete so I figured I would take Podolski, even though I wasn't sure I would ever even use him. I used him as part of a German team (for weekly objectives) and was very underwhelmed. I didn't have very high expectations, but he still under performed considerably compared to those around him.
Pace: I played him at RAM, and the 81 pace was tolerable, but ideally it would be a bit higher. I wasn't going to waste a hunter on a player I'll hardly ever use, but even if I did, I think he would then be lacking significantly more in his passing and shooting.
Shooting: This was definitely the biggest disappointment in him. The shot power is pretty decent in game as you'd expect, but the rest of the stats aren't quite good enough for him to be a reliable goalscorer. I found it best to just slam shots at the goal very powerfully, and hoping they somehow find a corner, or more likely, get parried away where another attacker can get the rebound to score. Even cutting in onto his strong foot didn't let him get quality shots off. Definitely wouldn't recommending trying finesses with either foot, and right footed shots in general should be avoided.
Passing: Passing was pretty solid overall, if unspectacular (had one game with 5 assists, and 4 assists in 17 other games). Granted he was somewhat wide in the formation as a RAM and was therefore less involved in the buildup play, but he seemed to not even get into positions to receive the ball. Crosses were average at best, more often than not being cut out before they even make it to the middle. Right footed passes (again) should be avoided, especially crosses.
Dribbling: He was decent on the ball but I preferred other players in the team (particularly 84 Gotze and 83 Goretzka) to handle the dribbling. Composure, although at 83 seems decent, but is nonexistent because he missed 5 or so 1 on 1s with the keeper, pushing the ball around 3 feet wide every time.
Defending: I told him to stay forward, and therefore didn't expect him to contribute much defensively, and because of his low defensive work rate, he certainly chose to take zero part in defending. Because the team I was playing with was quite small, I thought he might be a decent/my best option for headers from goal kicks (because I didn't trust this team to build out of the back). Although he's 6' and going against fullbacks, he probably only won 40% of his headers, and even when he did, the ball rarely found a teammate.
Physical: The strength was probably the brightest part of his performances. It was a little strange to see someone cut in from the wing and then outmuscle Sule defending him, before continuing on to shank the shot where he had a clear view of the goal. Stamina wasn't an issue even though it is relatively low. This was probably a combination of his medium/low work rates and my instructions telling him to stay forward.
Strength
Shot power
Getting into shooting positions
Shooting/Composure left a lot to be desired, particularly when missing 1 on 1s with the keeper
Weak foot
Probably pretty expensive for an average at best card
League without quality links
