As a fan of the blue samurai and bundesliga viewer (and very average fifa player fyi) I bought Hasebe right off the bat for the mere 10,500 coins he was sold for. I immediately put him in my japan squad and though it would be ok to use him with backbone chemistry. It was a terrible decision. However, I learned a few things (more so than when I slapped a shadow on him after). First, I can confirm his pace is a HUGE issue. Although when he did finally get close to someone his defensive skills proved to be great, I was very annoyed when he was outrun by a slow player on a few occasions. To make things worse, his strength and body type was not the best at all, and he struggled to muscle players off the ball (big red flag for any cb). To be honest, to play him at cb was, for my playing style, not the right move. With shoji in my defence, I slapped a shadow on Hasebe and put him at cdm which yielded better results. The better results were purely thanks to his passing. Even without the backbone chem style, his passing was impressive. I was able to counterattack well with accurate passes to wingers. With a shadow chem in the midfield he also provided good defensive support which in my 4231 was all I needed. Paired with counterattacking ability, I could always rely on him to provide great positioning. He was always positionally marking and cutting passing lanes when I wasn't controlling him (thanks to his defensive awareness stat). As a result, I was sold on putting him in the midfield and even more sold on playing him in a Nishino-Japan style formation, but I think using him in a sweeper or libero cb position could be decent as well.
This was very much a sentimental card for me. He's the opposite of a beast but utilizing him in a position which plays on his strengths makes him usable. Pick him up for cheap if you're a japan or eintract frankfurt fan. Otherwise, just snag 84 boateng or tomiyasu or 85 witsel.
passing!!, defensive awareness and skills (tackling), composure
I would put a shadow or even catalyst for best results.
PACE, strength, jumping, height, stock (pretty much all major cb necessities except tackling and defensive awareness/postioning), stamina, dribbling, shooting
Like every manager to have utilized his skills, I think he is best positioned as a CDM (but could also be used as a sweeper (libero) CB).
