It’s Promo Time! This past Friday marked the release of the first Rulebreaker promo squad and with that some intriguing new options. By now I am sure you know that the promo involves taking current gold cards and rearranging plus boosting their statistics to turn them into a different style of player… ie. giving Harry Kane pace, which of course turned him into a 1.2 million coin card. While Harry was well beyond anything I can afford I was intrigued by the new and improved Shooting statistic of Douglas Costa… +14 improved to be exact, and only at a cost of -4 Pace. Additionally, the small increase to Passing, Dribbling, Defending & Physical brought Rulebreaker Costa to an 87 overall rating and a pricey 470k (now 420k) price tag. It didn’t take long to determine that the HUNTER chemistry style would work best for my playstyle and I placed Douglas Costa at the head of my 4-4-2 formation alongside RED IF Marcus Rashford (if you follow me on Twitter @IVIaeNine you might have witnessed my crazy pack luck this week). In the end, Douglas Costa was the cherry on top all weekend in the following squad:
I won’t lie, I am prepared to face the wrath of the masses with this one, but I can not in good conscience give this card a rating beyond that of IF Allan Saint-Maximin or even Ousmane Dembélé for that matter. When I said Douglas Costa was the cherry on top I meant it, he is a luxury that goes beyond the core requirements of a squad. Don’t get me wrong, this card has some fantastic attributes and can rip teams apart for fun … but against the drop back merchants that plague every Weekend League I found the Brazilian to be ineffective at times. The scoring return of 15 goals and 11 assists in 15 matches was not overly impressive, but I should say that with 7 rage quits in my first 15 matches the returns do not paint an exact picture of Costa’s talents or abilities. While I touched on the Rulebreaker shooting increase it is worth taking a moment to say that they really juiced this card; the 95 FINISHING & 95 SHOT POWER are both fantastic and have turned Costa’s left foot into an outright canon… the finesse shots are also much improved and the variety of goals you can score on the left side is impressive.
Main Statistic - Dribbling
Main Attribute - Height
Dribbling Rating: 9.8/10
Height: 172 cm (5’8)
Much like Dembélé, I feel like combining these two categories is the best way to get the full picture of what Costa brings to the table. The pace and dribbling with this card are responsive, shifty, quick and agile… causing endless problems in danger areas. I would actually say that I prefer Costa as a winger, but with the extremely high price tag, I could not justify putting that amount of resources in an area that does not have a large impact. However, as a striker Costa’s dribbling was key to opening up the tight spaces in the middle of the pitch… allowing Firmino to overlap into quality areas… or allowing Rashford the time and space to get free. 94 AGILITY & 93 BALANCE feel incredibly receptive to the movements your input and his 93 BALL CONTROL & 94 DRIBBLING are amplified by his smaller 172cm (5’8) frame. While this FIFA has challenged the different player archetypes and how effective they can be, I still believe the smaller players generally feel better on the ball, and Costa was no different… a smooth operator for sure.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 4/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4/5
One of the reasons I brought Allan Saint-Maximin into my comparison to Douglas Costa was for this reason… the great coins debate. 430k is the current going rate for Douglas Costa and it is just not worth it. Yes, he can pull off some absolutely stunning goals and is by far one of the most unique and enjoyable cards in the game. But all of these comments hold true for ASM as well and you can get him for 130k cheaper and comes with the same 5 STAR SKILLS and an improved 4 STAR WEAK FOOT. If you only look at their preferred foot then the Shooting boost Costa received makes him a superior option hands down and again makes my argument for this card as an incredible winger. But as a striker, I just felt Costa missed too many opportunities on his right foot where I was expecting a goal as a reward for the hard work required to get there.
Two major issues in this category, which continue my comments in the value/coins rating… that this card maybe is not worth the price tag. #1 59 STRENGTH … #2 72 STAMINA … while Costa’s height intensifies his ability on the ball; it also has an adverse effect on his lack of strength. 59 STRENGTH is going to cause issues, we all know that, and for me, it continues my narrative that Costa is probably best served in wider positions and therefore not worth the price in the end. Costa truly is one of the weakest cards I have used and unfortunately gets bullied in almost all challenges. The 72 STAMINA is also a limiting factor; this card gets zapped by 90 minutes and even as a striker was requiring a sub for extra time… again a difficult pill to swallow for a 400k+ card.
Closing Words
The dictionary defines luxury as ‘the state of great comfort and extravagant living’ and I couldn’t say it better myself. Douglas Costa is a luxury item and to me is not a card I would be “saving to improve my squad.” If you are in a position where coins are not an issue then I 100% recommend this card… Rulebreaker Costa is fun… no seriously, this card is a blast to use. The pace, skills, agility, outrageous volleys & pile-driving finishes Costa pulls off make you get out of your seat at least once per game. However, after you get your chair back into position and assume the “lean forward” for your serious matches… you start to realize that in the heat of battle what you need is consistent results. For me, I went back to IF Allan Saint-Maximin as my second striker beside IF Rashford to complete the Weekend League. ASM managed 12 goals and 5 assist in the remaining 12 (more difficult) matches of Weekend League and I couldn’t have been happier with my decision. The return to Elite 3 justified the choice in my mind and ultimately gave me more confidence in my frontmen. In the end, I think I am in the minority with a more negative viewpoint towards Costa, but I have never altered my opinions based on others, this is simply what I found in the 15 match test drive. In conclusion, it is a fun vs. function question for me… and if you decide to try your own experiment I really hope he is worth every hard earned coin. Cheers for reading.
I usually don't write reviews but since you guys have to go through the comments, I thought I give this card credit and write a review. I've been using him in for WL matches, replacing Sané. I kept him because I just wanted to try him out; I had him in Fifa 19 and he was great back then so I gave it a shot, I also had the coins to spare. And guys ... I didn't even think of Sané in any second, heck I didn't even use Sané as sub!
I gave him a hunter chem style and he's super fast, his skill moves are on point, quick and dirty and if executed well, almost unstoppable. His runs are great and exactly where they have to go, his finishing is clinical although you might want to make sure that you do not use his right foot unless you're 100% sure to score. Also, I used him as LS in a 4321 so forget about that ball roll thingy to get into good finishing position with the right foot. Just go straight far post with a power shot or if your opponent moves the keeper, short post. easy goals I promise.
Long story short, this guy is worlds superior to Sané. If you need a winger for a BuLi squad, this guy should be your choice.
If there is anything I can actually complain about: If you play a pass with his right foot or play a first touch pass when you're under pressure, there's a high probability of failure. But I believe that counts for every card in the game. Stats: (I bought him during WL): 25 games, 33 goals, 13 assists. Nothing more to add.
biggest pro right away: He's the only competitive 5* skiller in a BuLi squad
Finishing is indeed clinical
outside foot flair shot
pace pace pace
dribbling dribbling dribbling
amazing positioning
Size, don't even think of headers
right foot passing underwhelming
generally only shoot with the right foot when you literally cannot miss
he's rather weak so you need to make use of skill moves and good timing if there's a defender behind you. If they're in front of you, elastico will do ;)
Fast story how I got him, got lucky in BF to get Varane, Alisson and have some 110k coins in the club, decided to sell those as I had Ederson and in defence Militao-D.Carlos does the job very well for now, so I sold them 2, got the money and bought him for 430k, now when i write the review he is 410k, 20k loss? No. He is just too good to cry for 20k.
I use a hybrid squad with the trio of Teixeira Hero - Talisca RB and Paulinho IF alongside with Renato Sanches IF and Gelson Martins (planning to change with Alessandrini) and the only piece left was a LW/LM from Brazil in order to play all of them in 10 chem, Neymar is too expensive, so I went with the Douglas Costa gold card, he was very good but this.. oh god.
First 1-2 games I didn't like him, for me it felt clunky lol, he just got the ball and turned around hard but then his engine started and its just wow, the way he runs, skill moves, even Van Dijk or Ramos are just some toys for him with his agility and dribbling, the fake shot, the movement he is just too good.
I tried to play him as LW too and switched Talisca as ST, its good but not reaching the maximum potential, so back to ST and the duo Douglas Costa - Alex Teixeira is just deadly.
In conclusion if you have the coins and want an end game card to complete your squad.. he is the right choice.
Oh I forgot to say this, even if he has 3* WF, I have some emotions when he shoots with the right foot, tru, but when he goes with the left one.. good luck.
Agility, ball control, fake shot, skills, movement
Speed, very good speed combined with DRI
End game with his left foot
Very small player, super agile
Stamina, after min 75 he starts slowing down, but he is still usable as you can just dribble and pass to the other ST
Small, never wins a heading battle
3* WF sometimes, but with the finishing he has with Hunter he still score some bangers with right foot
I packed an untradeable Paulinho, got Talsica from the sbc, SOLD my whole squad before weekend league. Why you may ask? This one player Douglas Costa is perfection at left striker in 41212 in-game next to Dembele, and Salah at Cam. I was highly impressed with the close control dribbling which negates his physicality as he is so short. He has a low center of gravity and a lot of skill moves would come back to him when taking on the like of VVD or Varane. He's got electric pace and shooting amazing across goal. He is best on the left foot so of course keep it on the left. The stats speak for themselves in a weekend league. He could not play better for his price and I highly recommend getting him as he's out of packs and will rise to 520k! I hope you enjoyed this review, try him for yourself.
High pace
High shooting (highlights: att. position, shot power, etc)
Its now JANUARY, and TOTY is around the corner, and I'm sure many people will be looking at using this card to potentially link to any Bayern TOTY players that are released (and are wondering if he still is good), so here is my review on Douglas Costa having used and continue to use him in my squad from the rulebreakers promo all the way until now (and have ZERO plans to replace him). Note, I usually get E2 in champs, and div1 in rivals.
Ok, so he has played two main positions for me. Originally I played him as a LEFT STRIKER in a 41212(2) and was my main man, but as I packed untradeable Neymar and untradeable Mbappe he become a LM in a 442(2) . I've used him on both 10 and 7 chemistry and have barely felt any difference, but if you were to use at striker the extra shooting boost of using on 10 Chem is definitely encouraged.
This card has SO many pros.
1) 5 star skills (and we all know how important they are this fifa)
2) REALLY REALLY rapid on the ball. Makes sense with his 99 pace on a hunter, and u can definitely feel it.
3) Amazing dribbling (both skill move wise and left stick wise),and is definitely ON PAR with Neymar and Mbappe levels who I also use in my squad. He also gets the aids bounce backs when people try to tackle you, that neymar and mbappe also get..
4) Shooting is out of this world. One of the most clinical finishers I've used on this fifa and his feet are like cannons. People worrying about his 3 star weak foot...DON'T. His shooting stats mean
he literally hits them all on both feet. I haven't tried long shots on his weak foot, but everything in the box goes in on his weak foot.
In my opinion he is basically of the same mould as neymar and mbappe and I'm not exaggerating. I would say that Neymar and Mbappe are slightly better, but this card is not much off. Also for those wondering if he is still as good now against better cards, as he was when he was released....YES HE IS. I wont be replacing him any time soon, especially as I look to fit in a potential bayern TOTY card in my team.
His price and links are DEFINITELY one of the highest pro's of this card too. He is in the 300k mark (very cheap for a player of his quality), has brazilian links, and bayern links. The reluctance of people to use this card on 7 chemistry (since they already use neymar at LW), as well as the insistence of people to use varane and gomez at CB (making it too hard to fit costa in), is my only explanation for why this card is this cheap still.
Not really many cons to be honest.
1) The most major one is stamina. His 72 stamina is not a lie, and constantly need to sub him off at the 70th minute if I use him as a winger. As a striker I could keep him on the whole game however. Most players at this stage of the game should have a good super sub however, so this isnt an issue.
2) His lack of strength, but much like Neymar, it does not really matter.
3) Long passing is definitely poor as the 67 stat paints, but usually you are putting through balls to Costa so its all good. His short passing has no dramas.
4) Heading and defending are very bad, but again, not what you are looking for in an attacker. I will say though that his pace is good for pressing, but don't expect him to make any great interceptions
I was very lucky to get him in a pack and he is a beast, that finishing upgrade made him one of the best cards in FIFA and he isn’t as fast as he was but still with a hunter he would have 99 pace and acceleration so he is insane. he is also very agile and has got a nice balance, his passes aren’t the best but still they aren’t bad so the only bad thing of this card would be strength and the stamina but anyways he doesn’t need strength if the defenders can’t even touch him with that amazing dribbling
99 pace with hunter
Amazing shooting
Master dribbling
Great balance and agility
Easy linkable country
5* Skills
Perfect link with Goretzka, Lewandowski, Goretzka, Davies and Kimmich
Price: I would recommend that If you don’t have a lot of money buy Sane instead
I have always been a big fan of Douglas Costa (or as I call him, Doggles), as a real life player as well as in FIFA. When he got his FUT Birthday card in FIFA 19 and I started using him, I knew he was one of my favourite players. Then his Rulebreaker came out and I knew I had to buy and use him. His downgrade in pace was a bit dissapointing, but it wouldn't stop me. I slapped a Hunter chem style on him and I started using this card in CAM, as 5* skills are required to create space and he could use his shooting to score goals when needed. His passing might seem a bit low for a CAM and he occasionally does misplace passes, but the majority of the time it doesn't affect his ability to create chances for others. . As he is the CAM in my formation he is the centre of the attack and is always involved. He is especially efficient against defensive teams because of his smooth dribbling combined with his 5* skill moves, which allow him to humiliate defenders and leave them behind crying. You needn't worry about his 3* WF, as this card allows you to switch to his strong foot using the skills. If you do find yourself in a situation where you have to use his WF you won't be dissapointed as he has scored plenty of goals with his right foot. The only big issue that you will find in this card is his stamina. Unfortunately, you have to sub him off around the 75th minute as he will be exhausted. But still, you have 75 minutes of fun with him. The combination of his dribbling and his pace in addition to his upgraded shooting make this card boost your attack and allows for the use of fast attacks and quick combinations There is also a small extra this card brings. EA allowed this card to be the biggest kick off glitch card you can find. I can recall multiple times when Doggles saved my WL by clutching big games from kick off. I highly recommend using him and linking him is no issue. Enough good Bayern cards to find.
Sidenote: In the formation I play (4231) my CAM functions as a second striker in addition to being a playmaker. Explains the higher amount of goals compared to the assists.
Great pace
Incredible upgraded shooting
Insane dribbling (combined with the glitchy gameplay)
Great linking options (Brazil, Bayern Munich)
Cheaper (and better) than Neymar
Very fun and original card to use
Don't forget the kick off glitch!
Stamina
3* WF (for some people)
Passing is not amazing for a CAM, compared to other great cards for CAM.
----Luckily i was able to pack toty lewangolski in my 83+ attacker pack i had 300 packs saved and those were trash however i needed to link him so gave this guy a chance. I only expected to run with him and dribble but i love him more than lewa he can not be faster and with his left foot he is deadly. If you can afford him and need a lw/st bundesliga card this is your guy 140k price tag is such a joke to me i bought him for like 350k than sold and buyed again i lost a lot of coins with him but i really dont care so if you cant afford reus sbc and need a lw from bundesliga dont think and go for him.
Probably the best dribbler I've used. Really fantastic acceleration as well. Shooting feels lacking, however. IMO, worth maybe 300k but defo not as much as 470k at review.
