The RTTF brought a second half-squad into the mix on Friday with some additional options on which to spend our hard-earned coins… and boy do you have to spend. The prices on these RTTF cards have bordered on ridiculous as the lack of supply has led to prices only going one way. Memphis Depay was no different and I will dive into the price/value later in the review; it does go to show what a shiny new card will do to the community in general. After working Depay into my Weekend League squad it was off to the races as the Flying Dutchman led the line in the following squad:
I went with the DEADEYE chemistry style this weekend for a number of reasons; Depay carries good pace already, the Shooting and Passing boosts make Depay pinpoint when moving the ball on, and his Dribbling and Physicality are already well-rounded. It became obvious though that Depay would not be able to lead the line in a 4-2-3-1 and I soon had to shift to the 4-4-2 throughout the weekend. Depay does require a second striker to work off of and feed into his amazing abilities on the ball. 88 ACCELERATION & 88 SPRINT SPEED were both plenty to get around the pitch, but he does not have the dynamic pace to blow anyone away. Thankfully, 82 AGILITY & 80 BALANCE, mixed with 5 STAR SKILLS allows you to dance away from the challenges that his small lack of pace creates.
Linkability
Rating: 3/5
“The French League is such a difficult league to connect without getting into the big-budget options.” A quote taken from my Payet review but still holds true in looking at Depay. The Dutch options did offer some solace but again I found myself using players that are not quite my style in order to use this card. If you are planning to give this lad a run-out, make sure you have a plan to fit him in first.
Current Game Strength
Rating: 4.5/5
Depay is up there with some of the better players I have reviewed/used, but just doesn’t tip over into the very best. There is quality here no doubt and his 40 goal contributions in 20 matches were no joke. 32 goals is the standout here; 99 POSITIONING really does lead to some good runs and the positions he takes up in the final third are excellent. 95 FINISHING was also a key statistic and Depay bangs home the goals when given the chance… on his right foot.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 3.5/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4.5/5
The supply on the second batch of RTTF cards is insanely low and has driven the prices insanely high. Currently, Depay sits at 375k on PS4 and really Lyon only has a chance at a single upgrade in my mind, after that point this card will remain an 87 rated card for the remainder of FIFA. They could cause an upset, but that would be a risky gamble. Honestly, the best thing that could happen to the future of this card would be loses to both Zenit and Leipzig and a third-place finish, opening the door for Depay to receive some incredible boosts from a Europa League campaign.
So far I have praised the good qualities Depay offers for any FUT Manager wanting to add him to the squad, but there are still some obvious deficiencies as well. 3 STAR WEAK FOOT is not the be all and end all, and certainly not enough to condemn a player to the trade pile… but it is crazy how much of a difference it makes mentally. Every left-footed Depay chance that went astray I found myself saying, “if only he had a 4 STAR.” When Mane misses the same chance, “this game is rigged he always scores those!” As my video will show Depay did find the target on the left a few times, but not nearly enough given his chances. Overall though it must be said that this is certainly a well-rounded card, but I just wish he was “rounded” a little higher. One or two 90+ categories would negate any 3 STAR concerns in my mind, but as it stands he isn’t quite there.
Closing Words
If you are a Memphis Depay fan, creating a Dutch National Squad, or looking for another Ligue 1 connection, then this card does deliver and you will be satisfied with the quality on the pitch. If you are not selecting any of these boxes than the price of this card simply kills the value for me. Just searching a list of the 300k – 400k players in FUT sentences Depay to a lifetime on the market. Non-inform Hazard and Mane are just two of the superior options you can purchase with these coins, and again it will take more than one upgrade to Depay to reach these heights. There is no doubt he is good, a popular FUT option, performs beyond a lot of his stats … but only a RTTF player SBC could have saved him. Cheers for reading.
