Day 1015 of lockdown: Round #2 of the TOTSSF Community Vote and we are dropping back a little deeper this time with a look at the Midfield Maestro Thiago Alcântara. If you follow me on Twitter: @IVIaeday you will know that I have been struggling to replace Headliner Gini Wijnaldum in my squad. Struggling is maybe not the word, but I have not been able to find a replacement that offers more box to box than the Liverpool man. In Thiago, I was hoping I had found the solution to my problem; hoping he could both unlock opponents -1 depth backline, while providing defensive cover for my own defenders… a huge task! I played Thiago in the CM role of the 4-4-2 with Balanced Player Instructions, while a SHADOW chemistry style would hopefully at the pace and defensive attributes required for the position. Thiago was the Spanish mastermind in the following squad:
I don’t want to turn this review into a comparison between Headliner Wijnaldum and TOTSSF Thiago as many have not used Gini and would therefore be pointless. But I do want to point out that Wijnaldum has transformed my midfield and is so key to my 4-4-2 success. The goals and assists are one thing, but the defensive cover is also top tier. I bring this up because I did not notice his absence in the 20 games I used Thiago, which is a huge compliment to this card. If I am 100% honest I did notice a slight drop off in the attacking contributions from the middle of the park, but at the same time noted an improvement in both build-up play and defending. Thiago caught my attention immediately with his pace; you can feel the 99 ACCELERATION coursing through this card as he takes off like a jet aircraft off of the flight deck. Unfortunately, his cruising speed can feel slightly low, 84 SPRINT SPEED just not to the level of other players you come up against. However, you can avoid the would be tackles of pace merchants with the absolutely ridiculous dribbling Thiago possess. Never mind the 5 STAR SKILLS, just the left-stick dribbling alone can turn defenders inside out and leave them grasping at thin air. Loved, loved, loved the dribbling, cannot say it enough!
Linkability
Linkability Rating: 4/5
I mean, at this point you can just use your entire special card Bayern squad to link Thiago in with ease. Seriously, it just doesn’t end and we have not even had the Bundesliga TOTSSF, which will be littered with more options to fit Thiago in. Additionally, there is also a nice set of Spanish options available if you are looking for a different avenue… Butragueño and Raúl continue to be two of my most hated opponents.
End Game Strength
End Game Strength Rating: 4/5
I wanted to go with the 5/5 here if I am honest, but FUT Managers continue to tell me Gini is not quite good enough at this stage in FIFA (and they are probably right), and Thiago is at the exact same level, so he doesn’t quite make the cut either. However, I will say he is right on the line and definitely a useable option. In the middle of the park, you can utilize the dribbling of Thiago to make a ton of space, utilize the explosive acceleration to abuse that space pulling defenders out of position, followed by pinpoint passing (97 SHORT PASSING & 94 LONG PASSING) to dismantle your opponent's backline. With all of these positives, I would say the only reason Thiago was a drop off in attacking presence was his Med/Med work rates left him less inclined to really press forward with my attacks.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 5/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 4.5/5
110k for this card! Are you joking, this is incredible value for coins. The level of player you are getting has to be one of the best values going at this point. So far I have pointed out the build-up success with this card, but he defends as well; 99 INTERCEPTIONS was noticeable and crucial in the success I had this weekend. Thiago can break up play and immediately put you on the front foot with the assortment of tools in his locker. I will say it again, insane value here.
Really, only two negatives to discuss, but they do bring Thiago back down to Earth. The shooting on this card is not great, and borderline dreadful on his left foot. I would be lying if I didn’t say he cost me a few would-be goals had I been using a card with more offensive upside. Even the goals he did score (as per the video) show the GK getting a hand to shots I would normally expect to fly into the back of the goal. The second issue came in the form of Thiago’s strength, or lack thereof in the centre of the pitch. Normally, the acceleration and dribbling kept opponents from getting close, but when they did, it was game over. Finally, the 90 STAMINA can be challenged by the end of the match as a box to box all-action option. If you are using him as an out and out CAM or CDM this would not be an issue.
Closing Words
In the end, I don’t think my Headliner Wijnaldum will be replaced just yet. Thiago is the closest option I have used, but the hunt continues. Sure, TOTY De Bruyne and cards of this nature could change my team completely, but I don’t have 2.5 million to be placed into my box to box CM. I would love to hear what others are using as a decent value option for this position, I am always open to trying different things… before immediately reverting back to what I know (sad, but true). In the end, I still give Thiago a huge recommendation for any FUT Managers using Bundesliga squads, looking for a fresh face in the midfield, or in need of improved build-up play … he is a wizard. Cheers for reading.
So today i decided to use Thiago in my WL just to test him out, and this is my conclusions after 30 games in an elite 3 finish.
he is pretty good value as he is only around 160k which for some of his stats is a steal.
He played cdm alongside birthday bakayoko, in a 4231 with a shadow chemstyle.
feeks really similar to PIM Pirlo but obviously a lot better value
pros are that: he intercepts alot (which is expected with 93 interceptions. His dribbling is unreal one of the best cards on the ball I've ever used and goes really well with 5* skills.
passing is also really good can pinpoint a pass from anywhere on the pitch to any distance like a prime xavi.
shooting is ok but nothing unexpected, can finish basic chances but can be a bit unreliable in front of goal.
pace is really good with shadow but is a bit unnecessary as he already has 88 acclereration. maybe use powerhouse or sentinel instead.
defending can seem a bit transparent at some points and messes up quite a few tackles, but can also make some good tackles and completely change the game controlling the midfield.
he feels very weak on the ball and can be pushed off quite easily by a player with high strength like Viera or other big midfielders.
Low aggresion also causes him not to get as stuck in to some tackles as he should.
Thiago is genuinely a cracking plur after this recent upgrade. He is now 93 rated and has an extremely usable card, both in stats and links. Firstly, his links are great - there are plenty of bayern munich special cards you can strong link him with in different formations, Boateng FB, Goretzka Moments, Lewandowski headliner - even Alphonso Davies / Kimmich's Moments cards if you have them. He also offers nice soft links into la liga for example, links with ramos etc.
Primarily, i used Thiago as a holding midfielder. He is not played in a cdm role you may associate with Bakayoko/Kante because that does not suit his card, however he does sit the deepest of my midfielders and so he does take on lots of defensive responsibily (so maybe in esscense he is still a cdm?!). Thiago acts offensively as the pivot point of my attacks, patrolling the central third of the pitch. You can use his strong passing (92) to dish out passes through midfield or wider as he has the ability to do that. His dribbling is also really key for him in this role, he comes under pressure regularly under the ball but because of the 5* skills moves and insane dribbling/agility/balance he finds space around these players. Because he is not as involved in attacks his stats are not so impressive, but he will regularly pick up assists and can give you the odd goal. Defensively, he is still pretty good. I added an anchor to give him a boost in this department, more tackling and physical to help him out. He is not a 'destroyer' but he tackles pretty consistently when paired with another midfielder, in this case Goretzka moments.
He really fills in this vital role perfectly and that why i rate him so highly, when utilised well he can be so effective.
5* skill moves
SO clean dribbling
Strong passing
Relatively well rounded card
Really good links
Cheap (102k at present time)
Intelligent high end player.
3* weak foot can be problematic, but mostly he does not need to use it so this can be avoided.
Weakness on the ball - Thiago can beat players easily but if he is caught by them or cannot 'escape' he is likely to lose the ball
Slightly low defensive stats but they can be boosted.
This is my first review so I apologise if I miss anything. I am a casual Div 3/4, Gold 1 player :)
I needed a CDM to link to my Kimmich player moments and Ramos player moments and this Thiago card slotted in perfectly. I play him as a balanced CDM in the 4-2-2-2 with a shadow (next to Ramos). For the price of just 110k I picked up this card and put him straight into my team for Weekend league. In my first game I came up against Prime Cruyff and TOTY Messi, and this guy outclassed them. He was everything I wanted him to be and more! He feels absolutely amazing on the ball and his passing is pinpoint. His shot isn't great, but he still scored a couple of goals. In the end, I finished 23/4 and got my first Elite finnish this year. Thiago played a huge role in that and controlled the game.
So since the TOTS was right around the corner I decided to simply sell all my players and try a little budget team, but a week after the TOTS most consistent came out, Thiago was around 115k which I thought It was a really good price so I bought it as an investment. Since it was a budget squad I decided to throw him into the team becauseeeeee why not eh?
I used Anchor chemestry style with him on seven chemestry. Sublime. Absolutly sublime. His touch on the ball is next level. He just glides through. 5 star skill moves also makes him very good to exit high pressure situations and with such high composure It's really easy for him to distribute a pin point pass.
I used him as a second cdm with allan by his side and due to his high interceptions his positioning on the pitch was perfect. was always in the right spot.
As the prices went up I decided to sell him. Picked up kovacic in the player picks and wanted Kovacic to be as good as thiago. Not the case.
I then realized the SUPER HIGH reactions Thiago has which makes him aware of all the pitch in no time and with high interceptions? my god. I instantly bought Thiago back and this time I played him on 10 chemestry. For sure a big difference. Pretty much an improved version of the card I had before. Paired him up with TOTS Fernandinho(which for me is the best cdm I used this game and I've used pretty good ones). The midfield is complete.
I would say everything he needs, he has.
Excellent passes.
Great work rates if you want someone to control the game
5 start skills, high agility and balance
STRENGHT???? He seems to be so bloody strong, always finds a way to get the ball. Obviously not a Vieira type, but solid
Interceptions
High acceleration
Composure makes him look like a great finisher
Stamina!!!!!!! finally a usable Thiago
The price!!! He is so cheap and with such potential to go up when the Bundesliga tots comes around
When he came out I picked him up because he looked pretty good. At first he seemed like a bargain; a good all around midfielder for cheap. But not long after I started using him it became apparent that he simply was not that good. He was making mistake after mistake and generally doing things that are not acceptable of a 93 rated TOTS. Maybe if you try him he'll work for you better than he did for me but I'm glad to be selling him.
