Player Review
94 - IF
Given that other two reviews were overly positive on this card & his stats looking amazing, I decided to give this card a go this past week in Division Rivals and eventually in Weekend League as well. I'm Division 3 in rivals & Gold 1 in Weekend League (for skill comparison). I'm sure I'll get a lot of down votes for this and it pains me to say it, but overall I found CR7 to be the biggest fraud of a card for 1.5 million that I've ever played with. I can assure you that as a fan of CR7 in real life, I'm still in a state of "shock" to even having to write a negative review like this. I wanted to give my honest review so others don't make the same mistake I did; especially those who may play the same style of football as I. I play a short passing, quick build-up style of play. I use basic skill moves and quick ball movement to open up runs in tight spaces. I run a 4-1-2-1-2(narrow) formation; this past weekend I switched CR7 to ST with baby Butragueno also at ST & milestone Politano at CAM. I used him with an engine chemistry style in which I hoped to improve his balance.. a huge issue on this card. I'll run through his pros & cons below. Overall, I'd recommend staying far away from him this year as he just did not fit the meta.. especially for my style of play....and that outrageous price-point for what you get in return.
Pace & Aggression/Attack Positioning: Cristiano is very quick; his stats are accurate to how he felt in game for me. That combined with his H/L work-rates was a great pairing. He did make great runs, and was always getting to spaces that he needed to be in.
Passing: His passing although not amazing, did do the job well. He made good passes when I needed them most, nothing more nothing less than what you need from a striker.
Finishing: This is a pro and a con - he had some wonder goals for me - finesse on the outside of the box, low drivens, power near post... you name it. He also choked away countless easy opportunities that I couldn't believe he didn't finish. By the end of the WL I was so frustrated by his lack of composure in pressure moments that I had to rely on Butragueno and Politano to bail me out time and time again. I could not believe some of the one on one opportunities that he failed to slot home... such a shame.
Stamina: Was never super tired for me, which is a plus.
Ball Control/Balance/Dribbling/Strength: I could not believe how one of the most prolific dribblers in real life over his career could be so damn clumsy in game. Even with the engine chemistry he would so easily be knocked off the ball, lose his balance, over-run the ball, and not be able to control the ball in tight spaces. This was the breaking point of the card for me. Butragueno is a super weak striker, so I'm used to releasing the ball quickly or making quick, cute dribbles to stay away from physical CBs. Cristiano wouldn't even give me the opportunity to do this as anytime he was pressured (especially by physical CBs in Van Dijk and scream Pique) he would fall over like a pre-madonna. I started calling him Christie by the end of WL because of how many times he would fall on his purse (such a weak and clumsy player!)
Finishing: Pro & a Con - see Pro section above for more on this. He wasted many opportunities, the plus side is that he was in position to make those opportunities. Another con on shooting I did not mention goes together with his lack of balance and ball control mentioned above... he was unable to get tough shots off of his feet in tight pressure situations. This is really important as I'm sure everyone else will agree. It was almost like he had to have time to power up his shot every time or it was going to get blocked or taken off of his feet. Extremely frustrating!
