This is slowly becoming a bigger and bigger problem for me. The majority of these players' SBCs are enticing enough to want and get a review out quickly; the hope is that everyone reading can make an informed choice about whether or not to pull the trigger themselves. The issue is that my club is starting to look like a rainbow hodgepodge and deciding which combination to use when not completing reviews has become borderline impossible. This weekend I added to the collection in an attempt to shine some light on the Manchester United and England legend, Wayne Rooney. Previously, I had heard/read quite a few FUT Managers raving about this card operating in the midfield as both the CAM and CM roles since his release. But for me when you are test driving and End of an Era Wayne Rooney… one of the best strikers the Premier League has ever seen… then it could only be one position for me as I placed Rooney at the head of my 4-2-3-1 formation. The ENGINE chemistry style has some magical results with Rooney’s card and was key to producing some fantastic results in the end. Rooney truly proved to be the knockout punch all weekend in the following squad:
One game. That is how long it took me to realize that I had a serious contender for most goals in a Weekend League review on my hands. The quickness in tight areas, the pace in open space, the agility in the turn, and the power behind the shots… everything just feels right with this card. Even in gameplay that will give you FIFA 20 PTSD this card managed to bring a spark to my squad and was enjoyable to watch and use. I have never thought that EA really does many ICONs much justice… in fact, at times you wonder if they ever watched a minute of some of these legends in action. However, if you want to point out the bad then you have to acknowledge the good as well and with Wayne Rooney’s EOAE card… I think they got it just about right.
With 36 goals in 20 matches, Rooney just fell short of my previous Weekend League review record… but he did just about everything he could to claim the title. For starters the Outside Foot trait is borderline redundant, Rooney hits a ball with his left just as pure as any 5 STAR WEAK FOOT player I have reviewed. Wazza’s comes with just about the perfect stock Shooting statistics and requires zero chemistry styles to boost his impressive 90+ categories. Just look up the list of players on FUTBIN who have 90+ across the board in Shooting categories and you will find yourself with an impressive list of cards (the cheapest being 92 Stoichkov at 1.6 million coins, who has a 3 STAR WEAK FOOT). Rooney slides in alongside this elite group of snipers and truly ripped apart the net all weekend long.
Main Attribute - Intelligence
Work Rates: Medium/High
At this point I have amassed a pretty healthy total of cards used and reviewed… and I can tell you that none have felt as switched on as Rooney was this weekend. The runs that this card will initiate when midfielders are progressing with the ball are borderline unfair, Rooney simply finds the right space and the next thing your opponent knows the ball is in the back of the net. It was an extremely rare occurrence that Rooney was called offside this weekend (while IF Rashford does so 10 times a match) and overall he ran the channels and toed the line flawlessly across the 20 matches. I can understand why some FUT Managers are utilizing Rooney as a midfielder given the awareness that the card displays… but for me, it is a waste of the true menace he can create when unleashed in the final third.
Value/Coins & Good vs. Bad
Value/Coins Rating: 5/5
Good vs Bad Rating: 5/5
If my Stoichkov comment didn’t lay this one out, then I will double down on the fact that this card is insane value. Honestly, Rooney might be the one and only thing about TOTY that truly brought the magic we were all so desperate for. The nostalgia of a once dominant figure in world football, brought back to footballing life in pixelated form, at a price that allows you to keep your kidneys, is exactly what this game should be about. EOAE Rooney ticks every box, including the excellent value for under 400k price tag.
This card is about as well rounded as Mike Dean’s ego and really it is difficult to pinpoint a true weakness. The 89 SHORT PASSING (12 assists) made for some amazing tiki-taka plays and the accuracy mixed with pace can result in devastating one-two opportunities. But for me it was the raking 50 yard passes made possible by his 95 LONG PASSING that really caught the eye. Time and time again I would pick up the ball on the left side of the pitch, turn the would-be defender inside out with the 91 AGILITY & 90 BALANCE, then hit a devastating 50-yard missile across the pitch into the feet of Rashford in a dead sprint down the opposite wing… magic! Maybe even better than the passing is the physical nature of this card… the card truly is a spit of Wayne in his prime and the stocky body type can prove an absolute nightmare to dispossess. The 90 STRENGTH feels dead on and was incredibly useful against Drop Back Danny when trying to find some space in the box… holding off defenders and turning for a quickfire goal became a constant go-to option during the weekend and was only made possible by another one of Wayne’s many key attributes and talents.
As an LFC supporter who spent a large part of my life cursing the success of this Man United talisman… it pains me to say that this card is a no brainer. If you are early in the game and still trying to build up coins… scrap, save and crawl your way to completing this SBC. While time is on your side, the sooner that you find a way the more time you will have with a true game-changer in a FIFA that constantly feels less and less like the masterpiece we started with months ago. Rooney thankfully found a way to mitigate a lot of the sluggishness and poor gameplay, which resulted in a nice return and even more importantly, an enjoyable experience… a MUST complete. Hoping you are safe and well. Cheers for reading.
FINALLY after a really disappoint and quite bad TOTY, EA have release an SBC that in my opinion, it’s one of the best so far. Of course we are talking of the Great Rooney. I think it’s a fair price, yes, links can be a problem and I actually use him with 8 chem as I don’t have any England icons. At the beginning I was thinking in not doing him because he didn’t fit my squad and I have lots of untradeable players already. But I had to, because his stats looked AWESOME and probably EA will release a better ST in the future, but even if he was much better, he is not Rooney.
I enjoyed a lot playing with him, not only because he is good but I remember the old times, even if you weren’t a Manchester Utd fan, there was no way you dint enjoy watching him play. I have made lots of reviews but I have never said who I have in my team so I will quickly tell you the attack I use: 4-2-3-1 LAM: Ronaldo FB, RAM: Dybala Moments, CAM: Neymar, ST: Rooney
He wasn’t the fastest player I have used, some defenders like Varane reached him sometimes, but I didn’t expect him to be a flash. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that he is bad, but don't expect him to run as fast as Mbappe.
One of the best shooters I have used, even without upgrading his shooting. Something that makes his shots almost unstoppable is his 99 shot power, finishing and long shots were really great, but specially long shots as his shot power helped A LOT. He has a really nice 4* wf and a personal con for me is that he is right footed as I’m more used to them, but that depends in you. He also has outside foot shoot which makes it feel almost like 5* wf. Some more details to add are his perfect work rates (H/M) for a CAM or ST.
His passes are REALLY good for a ST, and that’s why I think that his best position would be CAM, I even thought of changing Neymar to ST because I feel like I’m wasting his passing. And Ronaldo felt really good at the wing, so I will just keep it like that but anyways as I was saying his passes are truly great, worth of Xavi. No matter if they are long, short, crosses, or with his wf, and even Free Kicks. Being honest he is the player who I enjoyed the most playing with
Insane dribbling, the only “bad” thing probably could be his balance, and being kinda exaggerated BUT with engine that problem disappears, and it upgrades too his agility. Everything else is perfect, reactions really great, they help at defending too, ball control is master class, dribbling too. He doesn’t have 5* skills but I think 4 is much more than enough. And composure is maxed, I’m impressed of how good this is, considering he is cheaper than Sabitzer, but EA owed us a good SBC.
Its not necessary, specially if you use him as ST like me, but at CAM it will help a lot, and you could even use him as a CM. And talking now about his Heading Acc. it’s one of the best headers I have used, him and Boateng are a nightmare for my opponent at corners.
I can’t ask more, perfect shooting, passing, dribbling, and even Phisicality? Really, EA surprised me with this amazing SBC, really great for ST and CAM so he won’t get bodied, he will be the one that bodies. It probably helps a lot too if you use him at CM. Aggression is really nice too, your opponent will be in big trouble if he has the ball with his defense, he bodied 5 times a defender and 4 of them ended in goal.
Pace isn’t bad at all
4* skills and wf
23 90+ stats with engine(full chem)
Amazing long shots and finishing
99 shot power
Passes make him able to play at ST, CAM, CM, and even at the wing
Agility and balance are pretty good with engine
Ball control, dribbling and 99 composure
He even has great defending and really good Heading
Feels like Gullit when talking about Phisicality
He is Rooney, it’s really fun to play with him
Almost feels like 5* wf with outside foot shoot
Links could be a problem, specially if you don’t have English icons
When I saw this card, I had to do him. I knew it would take a special card to replace Joao Felix POTM who has 400+ goal contributions in 190 games played for me, predominantly in fut champs and by all appearances this card looks special. EA have given him 4* skills (I struggle with attackers that don't have at least 4 star skills in this game), improved work rates, and boosted stats in all the key areas, especially stamina. It is such a well rounded card that I had a dilemma deciding what position to use him at as I believe he could make an excellent secondary CDM or CM, arriving late into the box to bang home goals. I ultimately decided to go with him at striker as I figured I would get better value for my coins there although I do have the flexibility to move him into the midfield by changing a couple of players around if I ever decide to some day.
I have him as a lone striker in the 4-2-3-1. Instructions are to stay forward, stay central, and get in behind. I decided to apply the engine chem style to address what I considered to be the "weaknesses" of the card as an attacker (really, I just wanted to get his pace, agility, balance, and key passing stats up above 90). I played 10 games with him in Div 4 rivals for the purposes of this review and intend to test him in fut champs this upcoming weekend. I am a gold 2 standard player if that helps you learn more about this card.
Let's dive a little deeper into the card, though.
Pace: Rooney is rapid, especially in a straight line. He isn't blistering fast like Lozano headliners but he has more than enough pace to get into a strong fut champs level team. Not too much to say here. But, once he gets past a defender, they aren't catching up easily, if at all. Even Varane.
Shooting: I would have expected a card with the un-boosted shooting stats this Rooney possesses to be a little bit better with his finishing. He missed some pretty easy chances for me, especially with his weak foot. I was starting to get a bit upset with him because my Felix finishes everything until he went on a goal scoring tear in the last few matches I played. Perhaps it was just me getting used to him after using a different striker for so long. However, Rooney does have one weapon in his arsenal that makes him a truly lethal striker: 99 shot power without a chem style. This is definitely noticeable. If he gets squared up and gets a good shot off, he absolutely drills the ball. In one instance, my opponent moved his keeper to prevent me from scoring cross goal. I didn't wait him out to see if he would so I could tuck it into the empty near corner and ended up shooting it right at the keeper. Silly me. But, it didn't matter because I scored anyway- Rooney hit the ball hard enough that it went right through the keeper's hands. You might say that "oh, that's just fifa being fifa", but after watching the replay, it is a save that I have seen goalkeepers make time and time again on lesser players so I am convinced that it was indeed the shot power that did it. In summary, Rooney isnt the best finisher I have used this year but he does have the attributes to make him a great goal scorer in FUT. Having the outside foot shot trait is a nice bonus and his finesse shots are also strong, although he does not possess that trait. I would have to describe his shooting as inconsistent because while he is capable of the spectacular with both feet, he misses just enough chances to make you a bit frustrated.
Dribbling: Rooney is a good dribbler. Despite the stocky build, he feels agile and quick. However, he doesn't provide you with truly elite dribbling. He doesn't have 5* skills, a custom body type with custom animations, or the flair trait, and occasionally takes a bad touch. The ball also doesn't seem to stick to him like it does with some attackers, The best dribbler I have used thus far in fifa 21 is my prime kaka who is truly special. He glides past defenders with ease and receives a speed boost like I have never seen before coming out of skill moves. Rooney does not have these special bonuses going for him but his dribbling is still very good. In summary, his dribbling won't hurt you but it won't win the game for you like with my Kaka.
Passing: Other than the occasional misplaced pass, I had no complaints here. He's not going to pick apart defences with his passing but he's not going to let you down either.
Defending: He has very good defending stats for a striker and you should definitely take advantage of that if you like to press your opponent at times like me. His tackling is definitely good enough to take the ball from the opposition and it will catch your opponent off guard since most attackers don't possess this level of defensive stats. It reminds me of tots KDB in fifa 20, which I played at CAM, and who, when I was pressing my opponent, often caught them off guard and stripped them of the ball in a very promising position with ease. I would say that his tackling is good enough to play as a secondary CDM or box to box CM, although it would definitely be less fun than playing him at striker.
Physical: his stamina is very good for a striker. But more importantly, Rooney is very strong. He pushes off defenders with ease. He has great strength and aggression, a stocky, short frame, and high agility and balance which make him quite tanky when someone tries to push hum off the ball. I recall a few instances of him pushing away Varane, a very useful attribute when everyone and their dog uses him in this game.
Intelligence: this is where Rooney truly made a difference for me and why I think I will keep him in my team over Felix at striker. He has High attacking work rates, which causes him to run in behind more than Felix did. He makes very effective runs and seems to draw AI defenders to him like a magnet. This was important because although he was not scoring at quite the same rate as Felix, he was opening up huge lanes for Kaka (my central CAM), and my 2 wide CAMs (Robben and Deulofeu) to run into (I have my wide CAMs set to get into the box). As a result, I was scoring more goals overall and with Robben especially, there was a noticeable uptick in production.
Links: The only true downside to this card and the main reason I didn't give him 5/5 value. It is difficult to get strong links to this card, and most of the best English soft links are defenders, other than Rashford, which means he'll be needing more links if you start him in the midfield to get him chem. The EFL championship cards are behind the power curve and would be unlikely to help you too much in FUT Champs, and the prices of useable English icons have gone through the roof. I would recommend starting in the 4-5-1 and putting him at striker and isolating him behind a couple of soft links (icons, ST Rashford, etc) unless you have a lot of icons or coins in your club. Post upgrade packs from TOTY, I suspect many of you reading this are like me and are a bit short on coins at the moment.
Overall Summary: Very good card. Elite shot power, physical attributes, straight line speed, and intelligence/positioning. Competitive in all other aspects of the game. If only his finishing was a little better/he had some dribbling attributes that gave him a little something special- he would be truly unstoppable. Get him in your team if you can get him on chem.
-Straight line speed
-Amazing physical stats
-Extremely well rounded
-Football intelligence: makes good runs and gets open
-Defensive stats to help with pressing your opponent
-The SBC is well priced and EA gave Rooney the boosts he deserved for an EOAE card.
-links. Getting him on full chem can be tough.
-lack of elite dribbling attributes that allows him beat meta defenders 1v1
-somewhat inconsistent finishing may be frustrating
This guy might as well just be an Icon considering he is WAYYY Better than most of them, throws you back to the days were legends didnt link to everyone... that and the way he feels in game is the nostalgic value of the card they you wont get in any other version of rooney. Truely feels like the complete player he was in previous itterations of fifa. Breaking the line, dropping into the midfield, fizzing it out to anyone and everyone and scoring absolute screamers, you get everything with this card and get your coins worth of value. For anyone that would like some gameplay and a full player review on him which may convince you whether or not to do this card, I have a video on him if you wanted to check it out <3 (1) Basically PRIME ICON ROONEY!!! Player Review :) - YouTube
Practically plays like an icon
Face card stats and in games are phenomenal
The ability to play get in behind or as a false 9
Distribution across the park is "xavi"esque
can actually dribble extremely well considering stocky body type
