FC 24 88 TOTGS Rodrygo Player Review

The dust has settled on the group stages of European Football and some significant individual contributions have been noted in the latest TOTGS promo.  The list certainly offers some intriguing options and we immediately jumped at the chance to look at the latest version of the Brazilian superstar, Rodrygo.

The Brazilian attacker was instrumental in Real Madrid’s perfect walk through Pool C and the hope was that he could be equally as effective in the group of death that we all call Weekend League.  On the surface the statistics and PlayStyles looked like the perfect wideman combination and the hope was that they would all perform up to standard in game.  

The 4-3-2-1 continues to feel like the only formation I can get any purchase from and with that Rodrygo slotted in perfecting as the LW option…  The application of the HUNTER Chemistry Style seemed like the only logical choice to both amplify Rodrygo’s speed, while still ensuring a constant goal threat when the chances fell.

Overall 

With each and every version of Rodrygo I just feel like the cards inch closer to being something game breaking.  The cards are fantastic and generally always feel well on top of the currently meta and power curve… TOTGS Rodrygo is no different and the 8 goals and 7 assists in 5 matches truly speaks to that dominance.  However, there are small niggling deficiencies that keep Rodrygo from truly entering conversations with the best of the current meta.

PlayStyles: Technical, Flair, First Touch

There  are certainly areas that Rodrygo needs to improve on with future cards to break into the elite tier of cards… But Dribbling certainly is not one of them.  I continue to believe that a full 10/10 for Dribbling requires the 5 STAR SKILLS to truly be “perfect,” but I would argue that this card is a 9.75/10 and about as close to perfect as you can get without the title.

The 92 AGILITY, 89 BALANCE & 91 DRIBBLING that come “stock” with this card are not in need of any further Chemistry Style upgrades and have this card literally flying around the pitch with responsiveness and quickness.  The mixture of fan favorite PlayStyles is certainly helpful as well, with the FIRST TOUCH becoming one of my favorites to use for responsive dribbling.

The 174cm | 5’9 frame was already built for top tier dribbling and then you add in the EXPLOSIVE AcceleRATE with all of the other bells and whistles and it becomes a consistent weapon to manipulate in wide areas of the pitch.  The TECHNICAL PlayStyle also offers opportunities to bring the ball into dangerous areas of the pitch before picking the best option to take advantage of the strong positions Rodrygo can work his way into.

If you search up the base statistics for Rodrygo and take a look around at the results you start to realize that the Brazilian is sitting about perfect in terms of value at present.  The only card cheaper is the 400K RTTF Saka that does not have a PlayStyle Plus… While the card next on the price list is TOTGS Saka that now has a PlayStyle Plus and prices at 850k.  In the end the 580k price tag as of this writing does feel like the absolute perfect value based on current market standards. 

Good vs. Bad

Certainly an attacking threat that contributed heavily to the goals tally early on this Weekend League… Rodrygo can deliver the goods and definitely played his part for a potential LW addition to my squad moving forward.

+ Everything good stems from the Dribbling and without the Pace the Dribbling would simply be ineffective overall.  The now 99 ACCELERATION & 99 SPRINT SPEED are only a QUICK STEP or RAPID PlayStyle away from being completely broken and still caused a ton of headaches across the weekend.

+ Thankfully the HUNTER did just enough to get the Shooting in order and certainly helped the rising goal tally in Rodrygo’s debut out on the wing.  The 99 FINISHING was of course of no concern, but the 85 SHOT POWER & 82 LONG SHOTS performed just well enough to fill the net when required.  The 4 STAR WEAK FOOT caused some issues as Rodrygo was prone to missing shots wide with a collection of close range chances going astray.

The rest is what separates Rodrygo from the very top tier level cards and ultimately caused issues during the review.

- Icon Kelly Smith looks about 2 foot tall in the pitch and yet  there is no doubt in my mind that she would body this card into oblivion.  The strength is non-existent with Rodrygo and against top tier wingbacks where pace was not an advantage, that lack of strength was more noticeable.

- Maybe more controversial given the 7 assists but the passing with this card was not the best.  In fact the majority of those numbers were made up by the DEAD BALL Plus, which is a fantastic addition to any squad I would add.  However, the out and out passing was not great with Rodrygo and led to a lot of turnovers across the review.

Closing Words

The card is not perfect, but the price tag is for what you get.  In the end adding a DEAD BALL Plus to my squad was maybe the best part of Rodrygo’s addition and he delivered on those throughout the review.  The Pace and Dribbling are there to match a top tier winger and had the strength and passing matched you would be looking at a million coin card.
